defenseonly | Is 30,000 to 40,000 dollars a year good pay? |
I was offered a job for 30,000 to 40,000 a year substancial pay I have not worked in a few years Additional Details Well, more detail, I have year til a graduate from a very reputable univsersity, I possess additional certifications, however, I have been self employed thus, my yearly income fluctuated so, I will have a distance to drive but I work on weekends as well. So I think money is money at this point our economy in Mich. sucks and everyone sort has to really stretch there pennies, I am single mom, if I had to work as clerk in gas station I would so Im thinking I should take and use it as a stepping stone, anymore thoughts? |

The median income in the US for males aged 25+ is about 39,000 -- so half of them make more, half make less.
To know if your salary offer is competitive for your job and your area of the country, you might want to look up some information at salary.com -- it's more or less correct for my job title and location.
A $30-40k is a pretty wide range for a job offer. Is that a base salary, or base + commissions? Or are they just saying that you could *potentially* earn that much?

it's a good starting salary, but you should be making more than that after working for a few years.. I started out making 35 thousand a year and now I'm up to around 50 thousand a year.. I've been working for like 8 years.. |

That totally depends on the jobs duties and responsibilities.
I would say that it is pretty decent however. |

Depends on what you would be doing. For clerking, it's okay; for engineering, it is not. |

This is TOTALLY based on where you live, and the benefits that are given to the employee.
40,000 and living in Boston, is bally making ends meet. but living anywhere in Maine and I could build any size house I want. But then again cost of living in Massachusetts is the highest in the country.
Also what are you doing for work depends on the market and competition. |

yep that is pretty good pay for starting!!! I make $36,000 and I've been at my job for almost 2 years. I still want more though. Congrats on the job offer! |

Hard to say, without knowing what sort of work you'd be doing, where in the country you live, how much experience you have in your chosen field, etc. |

If you have a collage degree it is not good pay. If you do not have a collage degree it is good pay.
I make 38,000 a year with only a high school education. Most of my friends at the same education level make about 20,000 to 25,000 a year. |

If you live anywhere besides CA or NY then yes. That's what I make and I do pretty damn good. I live in NC |

No way to answer that - it depends on the location, the job, and your experience. Give a little more detail and you'll get better answers.
Edit: In Michigan's lousy current economy, and without a degree, it's probably pretty decent. If the job has anything to do with what your degree will be in, that would be a bonus since it would give you good experience.
Good luck. |

It all depends on where you live. In New York City or San Francisco like the lady above remarked its not very good pay. However, where I live, that's excellent pay because ALMOST everyone where I live makes between $6,000 (disability checks) to $26,000/year (ironically, that makes my family one of the wealthiest in our county because we live in third poorest county in the state of Florida). However, I commend you on the 30-40K job since you have not worked in a few years you are starting over. I wish you the very best of luck. :-) |

I guess it really does depend where you live...I live in KY and I only make a little over 23,000 by myself and when my husband's job got outsourced we did just fine on one paycheck for 5 people. But I know if I lived back home in NY there would have been no way we would've survived... |

If the job offer is as an editor, then you will be tremendously overpaid. If the offer is for a position as an electrical engineer, then it's much too little.
I haven't used the site, but try http://www.salary.com/ to see if there is anything on that site to help you.
You should talk to somebody in your school's career placement office. |

it really depends on the type of job and level. the location of where you reside at does matter |

That's what I make and I think it's good pay. Of course, it depends on what the job is, if it's a CEO position or something like that, then it's not.
And if the job economy is bad where you live then the attitude of "beggars can't be choosers" is a good one to have. You can always look for another job while you're working at this one. |

It depends on your location and the cost of living in that location. I live in a growing town outside of New Orleans. That would be decent pay for this location cost of living, but if you live in a major city ( new york, LA ) 30-40k isn't much at all. |

Not if you work in San Francisco or New York City, but in some rinky dink town, yah. |
