I am turning 16 and my parents gave my sister a bed worth 400 bucks when she turned sixteen. turns out they wont spend a penny more on me.
the thing is that i wanted to get a laptop but it costs about 700 bucks. they want me to make up the difference if i do get a laptop. is it worth it, or should i get them to get me something better? or just give me the money? what do you think?

just so y'all know, my sister didn't need a bed, she wanted a new one bcuz it had a futon under it.
also, i was confused by my mom bcuz at first she said it was a $600 bed, so i was thinkin 100 difference wasnt so bad. also, im not complaining, im asking a question. |

If it is a laptop you want... take the money, put it in a savings acct. and start adding to it. When you have enough money to buy a laptop, then decided, do I really want or need a laptop, or would I rather have something else? |

wow, you sound like a spoiled brat. even if your parents don't rent they pay a mortgage, and since you don't know what a CC is, that definitely confirms the fact that you know NOTHING about your parents finances. YOU stated you think your mom makes 800 dollars a month. so based on your assumption, the mark up given by that guy up there is pretty much right on point. it's a rough mark up illustrating how expensive it is to raise a family, and how ungrateful you sound trying to capitalize on a gift. it is a GIFT it should be a present that your parents WANT to give you not one that you demand.

well jake, you are absolutely right. and too bad the point went right over this kids head. raising kids is expensive, and this young man obviously doesn't understand what his parents go through on a daily basis. It sounds like your parents spent the money on something your sister NEEDED! Perhaps they are wanting you to see the value of the dollar. They sound as though they are trying to treat the two or you equal. $400 to $700 is a big difference. My question to you is do you NEED the laptop or WANT it. There is a huge difference. Your parents may see something you NEED to get with the $400. Try not to come across to your parents as a spoiled brat, but rather the adult that you almost are and discuss this with them. Their thoughts may make you see things in a totally different light. |

You can do a great deal with $400. PS3 for one. For a laptop, it would be a good idea to maybe make up the difference. Dell sells several great laptops for 499 and up that I've looked into a while back.

If your parents are that tight with their giving, I'd recommend looking for work and simply earning your laptop instead of bothering with parents who don't want to spend their money on you. It's harsh, facing that reality, but it will make a good statement to your parents showing that you don't necessarily need them to buy you what you need..... |
