Is $50,000 to $60,000 ok for a comfortable life?
I am going to start education in order to become a chemical engineer. The biggest worry I have is if the expected salary, which is somewhere around $50000 to $60000 with maybe 2 years experience, be enough to lead a comfortable life without financial worries in canada, especially Toronto. Please reply. Thanks a lot.

This is canadian dollars.

It depends... Are you going to support a family? Are you single or married? Does your spouse work? What kind of life do you consider comfortable? What do you need to be comfortable, and how much do you want to save per year? You need to sit down and figure all of this out. Make a budget. Only you can answer those questions. No one can answer them for you. For me, that salary would not be enough, but I may be in a different situation, stage of life than you. Financially speaking, everything is relative.

I have found that $50,000 a week is a great start for a comfortable life.

depending were you are living and how you like to live

It's more than enough to live on if you're living by yourself, and as long as you have the "normal" expenses expected of anyone, like rent/mortgage, car insurance, car payment, groceries, and so on. A secondary income is also nice, like if you're married or whatever.

As far as living a life without financial worries, though, you have a way to go. While 50-60K will leave you with a little extra (again, assuming you're "normal"), it won't wipe out your debt completely without some real effort on your part. Your best bet is to take care of the long-term debt you have as soon as possible, and BEFORE taking on more.

Depends if you are only supporting yourself or others too. If just yourself, yes more than enough.

You can live a pretty good life on less than this.

that ought to cover gas. You are better off working at a gas station where you can syphon off a few gallons a day.

Yes if you watch your budget .

Depends on what you personally think of as comfortable. People survive on way less than that. Personally, I wouldnt want to live on that with my family of 5.

we can't really answer that question for you
we don't know where you live how much you pay for ur house, apartement, w/e
how much you spend on clothes, food, entertainment(movies, music, etc.)
you have to think about it and if this isn't enough money
either try something new b/c it's never too late or stick w/it if its something you really really really really like to do

TXgirl
Yes, but it also depends what type of car u will get, what type of house etc.
But for a normal life yes.
My husband makes like 45 -50 a year but we have a benz c230 and a ford f-150 super crew plus the house and right now I aint working, we make it now, but now too much extra money for the other things but bills.
Until I get a job.

$50-60,000 will give you a modest, but comfortable life. You will be able to have the things that you desire but will by no means be able to live an extravagant life.

In the end what it boils down to is how much you like your job and how important liking your job is. My future career is as a social worker which in the US pays VERY modest incomes (30,000 a year) but I LOVE what I do and in the end that is all that is very importnat to me.

Yes it would be, you would be living far from luxurious but if your spouse was also pulling in that kind of money then you's be pretty well set.

you should be just fine, watch your spending and don't get too far ahead of your self. take things one step at a time. but 50k to start is great, only goes up from there if you play your cards right.
