Is 54,500 a year decent for 1 person?

depnds on how old you are ..what the job is and where you live..

sean1010
It sure is a good salary now all you have to do is save some of it and work on getting a raise so your salary will increase you are worth it and don't forget that .
good luck

That is about 2x what I make. According to the US Census Bureau, that is above the median household income for 2005. That means 50% of households made LESS that that for the year.

Yes considering a teacher with a masters doesnt make that much a year (I should know btw ;) )

It does depend on what you have to do to earn it. I was recently earning 3 times that writing software. But it wasn't worth it - I quit and became unemployed with no income. It's much better.

With luck I can find something paying maybe $60K, but what I have to do to earn it matters far more.

Lost Poet
It's decent, depends on what you're doing though. If you have to work weekends, long shifts, be on call, etc. it might not be great. More details please.

For what job? What's your education, how long did you go to school, what were your grades? Do you have working experience in the field? Do you owe a student loan? What's the avg pay for the job with similar experience?

Is that good for you? If you live alone, eat at home, don't go out much...personally, I could payoff my student loan, a years worth of bills, buy a car, travel half way around the world and still have a nice CD stashed in the bank, for that. That's just me and I live cheaply.

Maybe it's not what I'm worth...

low in new york, high in montana, all depends how much is the cost of living in your area. Check out salaries.com to see the median salary pay in your area and job.

I only make 32K a year so I would say that is good.

It is pretty good no matter what (so congrats) but... Where do you live? How old are you? What do you do?

In NYC you would just get by. That is pre-tax and if you are lucky and are paying under $20,000.00 a year in rent you are still not left with much.

In most of the country you would be doing just fine.

AVERAGE AMERICAN
$35, 499 avg. salary per year (according to the last census report)
$147.91 per work day (avg. of 20 work days per month x 12 months)
$18.49 per hour of the work day (8 work hours)
$.31 per minute of the work day (480 work minutes)
$.005 per second of the work day (28,800 work seconds)

In NYC the average salary in 2005 was $48,960.00.
