Is a family earning $100K "rich"?
in your opinion? What if that entails one spouse working two jobs? What if the people had to go to college and graduate school and have student loans in the six figures to pay back?

It depends on who you ask. Someone truly poor (I know many) would answer yes! Someone truly rich (I know 2) would answer no! I have family in the 100-150K category and they're barely making it. From what I've seen no matter how much some folks earn they're always trying to keep up with the Jone's and end up living above their means. IMO, 100K does not make for rich but living within ones means can make one comfortable.

my wife and I earn over 100,000 a year. We are not rich. We unlike many in this country are comfortable. We can pay all of our bills and there is money left over to the things we want to do.

The problem with many is that they are waiting for someone else to take care of them. Self-employment is the key to financial freedom. Control of assets, not large amounts of money. Owning things that generate cash flow is the only way to self sufficiency. A job is just what is says; Just over broke.

Average income of a family in US is around 40,000-50,000 so you are above a middle class. However, a lot of people make over 100K so I would consider that an upper middle class (single).

If you are with a family (of 4), middle class

It really depends on a lot of things. How many kids? How much debt? Is this inner-city New York or Suburbs in Oklahoma?

Without kids in a low-cost neighborhood, then maybe a little bit. Certainly no worries and lots of spending money.
But 7 kids + loans in NYC you'd be near-broke.

100k in New York city is just about making it. South Carolina is middle class. All depends on cost of living and lifestyle

$100K a year isn't rich anymore, but it's upper middle-class. It's very comfortable, even with six-figure student loans.

Tam
Yes, considering my families is $35K.
