Is age 23 kind of old to be moving out of your parents' house?
I recently graduated from college, while living home (to cut costs). Anyway, my goal is to be moved out by age 23 (thus within the next year or so); however, I will modify this goal if my finances allow for it. At present, I am saving money for this very purpose as well as taking care of some debt I have incurred. I have a car, so that's not a problem. My employment prospects are becoming more stable. This being said, I feel that I am to a point I should be moving out.

I don't feel that it should be rushed as potentially I could be back where I started, living back at home. When I move out, my objective is to not rely at all on my parents or be a "boomerang kid".

I guess my question is... am I behind my peers in moving out or am I basically on time?

Sorry this has gotten long, I felt the need to explain my situation and my thoughts on this issue.

There are a couple things to consider here: a) financial, and b) developmental. Sounds like you're on the right track with your career & saving money - which is great. As for your personal development, there is something to be said for suffering a bit when you go out on your own - it builds charecter. There's a time & place for learning how to fend for yourself. Surviving on Top Ramen might be better for you than Mom's home cooking - as long as you still maintain positive cash flow and save money along the way. In my personal experience, nothing has been more enriching than waking up in my own place, paying bills (even if it HURTS), cooking, cleaning (even if it SUCKS), doing laundry, etc. Bottom line is that you're still very young - don't feel rushed, but also, don't get TOO comfortable. Whatever you do, don't go buying a bunch of useless crap (nice car stereo, PS3, etc)...unless it's some cheap furniture for your new place. You sound like you have an exit strategy in place - just stick to it.

Eh thats fine...Only people who wouldn't think so didn't go to college or are not even out of high school and don't know how hard it can be.

Van is due 5/8/08!
I think you may be a little bit behind, but a lot of your peers have moved out on mommy and daddy's budged. The parents typically will pay for their schooling and apartment/dorm, car payments and whatever else. If you are trying to be 100% independent from your parents that that is a good age. A lot of people our age (i'm almost 22) will finish school and move back home before they get a stable job. Only reason I have not relied on my parents is because I got married when I was 19.

Good luck to you and congrats on graduating!!

Not many people have a college degree, a savings plan, a car, stable employment prospects and are taking care of debt when they move out. You may be a little old to be experiencing this kind of independence, but are ahead of the game. There is much less of a chance you'll be back in your parents' home. Good job.

ur fine. just stick to your goal on moving out by the end of the year. you'll be fine.

No, it's not too old. I think it's smart to live at home until you're financially stable...as long as you are working toward financial stability. In a lot of countries, that's still the norm.

Sounds like you have a good plan!

Your life, your schedule. As long as your parents are happy having you there, there's no need to rush to move before you are ready. I'm not sure whether most 23 year olds live on their own, but being exactly average is not mandatory in this life.

i moved out when i was 18. but i come from a very poor family so it didnt make much of a difference. i also had a roommate immediately.
whatever works for you works for you. but if i was 23 and some guy wanted to date me and i found out he still lived at home i probably wouldnt date him.

I think you're doing the right thing, it's best to be economically stable and truly independant before moving out of your house. Like you said, what's the point of being a "boomerang child".

Just take you time and do things right.

look NEVER LISTEN to how anyone else judges YOUR life. at least your getting on your own!!! things happen at different times for different people. you dont have to be married with kids by thirty either. so save your money, learn to use your debit account, pay off your plastic and dont use it and enjoy your life!you earned it:-)

Its seems fine considering your present position with money.

I moved out when I was 18. Soo, Iwould think thats a bit old, 21 seems to be average, but its whats best for you. You want to be stable when you decided to leave.

hooterville
Get a job, save money for a few months and then move out.

umm haha yes that is a LITTLE bit too old to be living with your parents. you should move on with your life and try to socialize with new people. maybe if u meet someone, you could be roomies! hhaha sorry that was weird but yeah....
