piggie | Is anyone else in UK struggling to afford the weekly grocery shop? |
We're a family with a ten month old baby who don't buy any luxuary items, and our food shopping bill is still so expensive. Is anyone else in the same boat and do you have any tips to save money? What with utility bills and fuel prices, I don't know what to do. |

I'm quite happy. I don't drive...I'm a cyclist. So I guess that stops stupid fuel prices for me. Also my parents pay my rent & bills, and I have a job...(full time right now - uni over for summer =] )
I guess I'd be in a lot of trouble without my parents. |

its really hard-I do more vegatarian type meals with lentils etc.-and dont buy expensive ready made stuff.Whatever meat or fish I get I get less and add lots of veg.
you could grow your own veg-easier than you think and doesnt need lots of space or even a garden-you can do lots in pots |

When I shop, usually in Tesco's, I just get whatever is on offer.( like bogof ...). We seem to do pretty well like that, but yes, we are feeling the pinch at the moment. |

Honestly we are going through the exact same problem, Money here in shops is worthless you need to be loaded to shop at Tesco's if you are not buying the own home brand and even that is at a ridiculous price, my family shops at Lidl. |

i appreciate your question. i'm in the usa and gas prices are up up up but food is still not too bad. we american's are a spoiled lot, complaining if we don't have easy-street. todays generation has no idea how challenging it was to be living in the 30's and 40's.
we are a family of four. one income. we have cut back our driving, parked our big suv and drive our vw daily now. we cut the trips to starbucks and luxery items like expensive ice cream, soda, etc. |

i know your problem as do many a family at the moment. Start by changing from say sainsburys to lidl or aldi they are alot cheaper at the moment. Also you can go on all the web sites of different supermarkets and see all their offers of the week they are all generally different and you could get lodsa different items at half price or two for one. Finally a great website is www.moneysavingexpert.com they can help you save money on everything.
Good luck |

our grocery bill is about £40.00 a month more than it was this time last year and nothing has changed what we buy now from then its breaking us too as we havent had a take away for 12 months and above.the only tip i can give you is to checkout prices online to see what products are cheapest where it means going from one supermarket to another a pain but you do save as much as £5.00 some weeks |

It is getting very expensive to eat well here in the UK. Getting an allotment as already suggested or forming a kitchen garden co-op are really good ideas and will be mosr popular in future. My mate has an allotment and the food he grows is lovely. |

Yep it's painful at the moment. My husband didn't even get a payrise this year and I only work part time.
Try planning meals and only buying what you don't already have in the cupboards. Make big pasta bake dishes and rice meals which are filling and relatively cheap. We make do with 'on toast' jobs twice a week, like beans and cheese, beans wiv fried egg on top, tinned spagetti etc although we try to make sure the kids still get their '5 a day'.
Also, leave early and walk instead of taking the car wherever possible, sell any old clothes, toys etc. on the web or at car boot sales.
Wot some other people are saying is true though, we do have it VERY easy compared to say our grandparents time. Hang in there, its got to get better at some point. |

we're go o ASDA every weekend for shopping. all we get its the cheapest smart price stuff from there. for the 2 of us, it cost around £25.00 and some takeaways during the weekend. we have only one car with very high fuel efficiency. plus monthly bills (no mortgage, we paid by cash). it still seems struggling. everything is going apart from our wages. i think the gov should do something about it. cos many people cant afford to buy a house and food as well as the bill. |

We have 2 Tescos near me - one in a smaller town than the other. That's the one that has the best offers.
I go there about 7 pm and look first at all the things marked down to clear. I have got pretty good deals there, especially in the last hour before closing on Christmas Eve, when many things were marked down to rather less than 50 cents. Most useful end-of-day buys are potatoes, veg, fruit, milk, eggs (there might be one cracked in the box - use that first in a scrambled egg), fresh meat - but real meat, not the sausage or other manufactured stuff. Sometimes they have bread and other items with good prices.
At the same time, note dates on items on the shelves. They may have overlooked something with today's date, and ask for it to be reduced. I once got a ham priced 22 euro for 3 euro.
Meat is expensive, so use less and add lots more vegetables in a stew. Your baby can eat this too, but go easy on salt or shop-bought stock - not good for little tummies. Packet or canned baby food, or even the little glass jars, are all very expensive and not nearly as good as home-cooked. If you cook a big stew, it will do for 2 or 3 days and take less time to heat on a subsequent day.
I have noticed that where an item is bogof, if you find 2 of them in the reduced section, at the checkout it is still bogof so you only pay for one. Even better.
With fruit, I freeze the excess and (1) thaw out to use in smoothies or (2) stew for dessert.
Next year try growing your own salads or tomatoes if you have a garden or a balcony.
If you have a friend you could go shopping with, go in the one car (you could take turns) and split between you if any offer you are tempted by is too much for one household.
Good luck!! |

Yep. I cut back so much that I only spent £20 on last weeks shopping on just the basics. I can't spend anymore than that otherwise iI'll be in trouble. I have a husband and 2 kids. |

We have 2 wages coming in & still find it a struggle especially to say no to 2 kids who are always wanting.
Try car boots for stuff (including clothes) for your baby if you don't already. Can get toys etc cheap - I put them in the bath & scrub them & they come up good as new!
Have you got Home & Bargain shop by you? Their nappies are 1/2 the price of pampers etc but just as good.
How people afford to go abroad for weeks on end, I don't know!
I know it's awful but it's good to know others are in same position as you cos you don't feel you're the only one. Something will have to change soon, people can't go on like this. |

I don't have a job so I can't afford much food. I usually steal a big bag of rice by concealing it in my wheelchair then eat it every day for a month. |
