Keepin' It Kosheя ² ▀▄▀▄▀ | Is anyone on a Budget? |
I was just wondering.
People talk about tightening their belts, but I was wondering if they really institute a budget and say to themselves, "I'm only spending $25 this week" or do you just try to avoid going out and spending all together?
I've put myself on a $20 petty cash allowance for like a month just to practice discipline with spending. Additional Details My current view is, "If I don't have the cash in my pockets I don't spend it. That's why I've put myself on the $20 a week plan. Even if I do have the cash in my account, I've avoided using debit, cuz I find myself looking over my statement at the end of the month with too many 5, 10, 20 dollar charges and getting scared at how fast it adds up. A lot of great input. :-) Thank you. |

I'm not exactly on a budget -- I certainly try to spend less than I used to. But I was listening to Neal Boortz somewhat recently -- for those of you who aren't familiar with him, he's a rather-conservative Libertarian talk show host who airs on radio stations around the country -- smart guy, too. (A Jewish girl who's conservative?? Crazy, right? :-D) Anyway, he was talking about this system of money saving that an acquaintance once told him about, and he now practices it as well -- I think he calls it the "dollar bill savings plan." And here's how it goes: Carry cash on you, but only spend $5 bills, $20 bills, etc. Never $1 bills. Every time you get cash back from a purchase, you put the single dollars in your pocket and place them in a jar, box, or something of the sort, when you get home. Eventually, when you go through your jar/box and count what you've saved, you'll be astounded. Apparently, it's quite effective, and I'm trying it out myself. |

My family and I have a been on a personal spending limit for over 2 years. It helps when you get on a budget (spending plan) that you are doing it to reach a goal. The money we save by not going out to dinner more than one time per week helps to fund our family summer vacations.
Don't deny yourself all pleasures or fun items. Just budget for them. If you like to go out with friends, maybe instead of going out every night just limit yourself to once or twice per week. This will result in a slight savings that you can use to buy some new clothes or some other splurge item. |

I'm hurting this month. I'm not going out for food. Thats number one. Cook your own meals. I've been saving like crazy.
Sip your drinks and skip the shots.
You don't need those new pair of shoes.
Go through your closet and put new outfits together or find stuff in there you haven't worn in a while.
Cut your phone bill time in half and get regular cable.
Turn off your lights.
Bum smokes.
the dollar store. period!
You'll find you have more than you think after all that. I would start looking at your budget on a daily basis rather than a Weekly. It helps. If you need more info, I have some other ideas, just eme back

Always on a budget, there is no other way to keep track of your expenses. $20 a month for spending money is not very much, good luck on that!
The best way to keep track of spending is to write down all your expenses every week in columns listed as.... what it is for, how much, when it is to be paid.
I went to apply for a home loan once and the banker asked if we know how much money we spend each month and I showed him my list for the past year and he was amazed. Back then it was about $1500 a month and it's been growing ever since.
I have actually planned out which payments to pay each week to balance out with the income each week. Even though a certain payment was not due for a few weeks, I put it in the week I could afford it without cutting me short all in one week. |

My husband and I are on a budget and have been for a couple of years now. We just follow the basic need vs want concept and limit our spendings to necessities. Yes, we're living below our means, but that's what we need to do to pay off our school loans (mine got paid off in just over a year!) and save for a sizable downpayment on a house. |

My budget is that I stay within my income, pay my bills as they come in and buy only what is absolutely necessary. The money saved stays in the savings account. |

Yes I am for real now "on a budget"- and it's quite slim, or at least comparatively slim.
Also, we never were big on charging things- from groceries to vehicles to education to decorating our home, if we don't have the cash, we don't get it. We wait until we have the cash, instead of paying interest to someone else, even when it's low interest or 'delayed interest'- we just avoid it. But we avoid it more now, and have actually reduced what we carry to one credit card each, to be used very sparingly (a budget on those, too). We have only stepped up what we have always done, to help offset what we have lost in our investments (and we have lost waaaay too much). And littlethings do add up- I bought a new espresso machine, because I added up what I was spending on cappucino and it came to a minimum of $42/ week, but more often about $72 (these babies have me living on caffeine at present). Which is goofy! |
