Is it OK to give out your bank account details on ebay?
I'd like to accept direct bank transfer for my business on ebay. Is it safe to give people your bank details? I was going to keep an account especially for payments in, and keep it so that there wasn't much money in it just incase.
Advice much appreciated.

YES IT IS SAFE....But ...

...only to individuals... DON'T simply put your details up for everyone to see, only give them to the person once they have 'won the bid', and then only through the Ebay Email channel.

The Bank details you give out are exactly the same as if you handed someone one of your cheques... The bank details off your cheque are all they need to make a BACS payment into your account. What I mean is, if you are happy to send a cheque to a stranger, then it is exactly the same 'risk' as giving him your bank details. Your Sort Code, Account Number and Account Name that are on a cheque, are the only things they will need to pay you the money via BACS, internet or telephone banking.

Just beware that you don't send the goods until the money hits your account, as even though they say they have instructed their bank to initiate payment via the BACS system, they can still cancel that instruction in the 4 days that the transfer takes to hit your account.

i use paypal for ebay and have never had a problem, with paypal though i dont think you can ever transfer th money into ur bank account. as far as im aware it work like this

u sell an item for £20- that £20 goes into ur paypal account and stays there until u buy something, i u bought something that was £10 then 10 would come out of your paypal account and there would still be 10 left in ur paypal account, does this make sense??

Giving bank account details into the unknown must be risky just keep transferring the money out of that account as you recive it.

I would not suggest giving any of your banking details out, even if this account is going to have very little money in it and only be used for payments coming in. You won't know the person on the other end whom you are giving this information and who knows what they will do with the info once they have it. On top of that, my bank charges $28.50 for each transfer like this and I would not be paying you for the item plus shipping and then having to pay another $28.50 to get you the money you are owed!

Use a different bank checking account and use it through PayPal.

If you notice most items on EBay will not display bank details until "checkout" after purchasing the item which would mean that only the purchaser would see the details. Personally I always deal through Paypal because of the added insurance that Paypal covers for any problems which I have had to use a few times myself. Pay pal can link to credit card or to bank account but having your bank details in the "checkout" also purchasers who do not wish to use Paypal the possibility of purchasing your goods.

firstly what do you mean by, Is it safe to give people your bank details?what people do you mean, the only people i would give my details to was pay pal when i first set it up. once its set up you should not have to give them the details again, never give your details out to anyone unless you know its a secure site and you know what your doing. pay pal is very good i use this when paying for goods and selling goods
on eBay.

Mikaila
whatever you do don't give it out
unless it is a secure site.

i wouldn't, its not safe. from those details they can clone you and cause serious trouble. look at Jeremy clarkson, he took the Micky out of people worrying about their details, gave his bank account details out in the paper and someone set up a direct debit for five hundred quid a month on his account.

better to be safe than sorry. pay pal is a better way of doing this or accept a personal cheque or postal order but giving out bank details, um i wouldn't.

This is really most unwise. You lay yourself open to the scammers. Don't do it.

Publishing your bank details on eBay is like inviting a whole load of stinking trouble round to your house for tea

Gizmo
Just be careful who you give your personal information to

Aye. Right!
You'd be better opening a Paypal account. It's free and easy.
