We're living in one of the poorer countries in the European Union right now. We only have a tiny apartment, but we do have a car, and a little extra money to put into savings each month- if we don't go out too often- However, I'm thinking of heading back to the States, but spouse isn't sure because we'd be starting with practically nothing except the few thousand we have in savings. I want to know if it's a good time to move back to the States, or if we'd better hold off. Is the U.S. in for a recession? Where can I get solid financial advice about this? |

The economy isn't too bad right now. But even in a recession you'd be better off in the US. If you or both you and your spouse work full time you could easily afford a good place to live and a car. |

the US is doing well financially. politically speaking, we are not necessarily in a bad time or a good time, it's a really interesting time to be an American. what with all the socio-political changes we are going through with the possiable election of a woman or an African-American president. |

The main things you should consider before moving anywhere are the following:
1. Employment opportunities. You will need a job, and job markets vary greatly depending on where you are in the states. Overall, though, it's a great job market--unemployment is near historical lows. So odds are you have a very good chance of finding a good job.
2. Education opportunities. If you don't have a degree, you may want one. The US is ripe with all sorts of training programs, educational institutes, and colleges/universities. Some are expensive, but others are very very affordable. Plus you may be able to qualify for financial aid/grants.
3. Living costs. Depending on where you move, average rents vary from $493 (Tulsa, OK) to $2250 (New York, NY). You will likely be renting, so choose your city/state wisely depending on how high a paying job you can get. If you're going to be a middle class worker, why move to NY or some other big expensive urban area? Move to the southeast, midwest, or the suburbs so your salary will go a long way.
Don't worry about the financial markets--who cares? You don't a lot of money in them anyway. Unless we hit a great depression where everyone is out of work, it won't affect you whether there's a recession or not. And it'll probably be worse for you in a poor country in the EU if that happens, as all financial markets are linked and if there's a depression, it'll be a global one.
Even really low-paid workers in the US can generally afford to live well--including a decent apartment or home, cable TV and utilities, ample food, and transportation. Plus there's free entertainment everywhere, including beautiful parks, public libraries, etc. If you live in a low cost area (again, the southeast or midwest) even the lowest salaries--minimum wage--are enough to own a home on and save for retirement.

If I were you I would watch all news on the business/economy in the US.I would be looking for areas that are booming or expanding and building.Here in Canada alberta is booming ,Ontario is slower but stable ,out east very poor in some areas.
It sounds like you will need to find work right away ,do you have a trade ?Can you do hard work to start with ie lay bricks,frame houses etc. The point is the US is as you know very large and has many economies and many opportunities spread out over a large area.What are your strengths and where in the US do they fit right now |

I am not an expert, but its really not a good time to move back here. Bush has pretty much turned this country into a debt ridden struggling nation.
Mortgage rates and interest is on the rise. Jobs are extremely hard to come by even if you have a degree, and its hard to to get assistance now. I know it probably sucks where you are too, but do more research, dont take my word for it. Call relatives, or the US emassy where you are, look for financial planners and keep doing internet research onthe subject. GOod luck! |
