anonymous | Is it better to have a good savings account (3 month reserve) or to paydown a large credit card? |
the card is at 0% interest until march, but it's a big balance. in march it gets fixed at 9%. I'm asking because I want to relocate to a new city, and I know I'm going to dig into that savings. what's best? |

Debt free is the best goal. |

Pay down the card - the interest rate on the card is higher than what you can earn on the savings account. Just put aside what you need for the move, and use the rest to pay the card down. |

It's always best to be debt free, so get rid of that credit card balance before the interest becomes due. Having a 3 months reserve is the standard amount one should have in their savings account, in case you have to live on it due to job loss, illness or some other reason. If at all possible, pay off the credit card, then re-build your savings back to the 3 month amount before you move. That way, you'll have that reserve to carry you through any emergency, plus you won't have that credit card balance lurking over your head. The best position to be in is where you don't owe anyone except your standard bills, building a great retirement account, and having that savings plan. So, depending on when you're moving to a new city, work on getting that card paid off as soon as possible, then pay it every month when you get a bill. Don't ever carry a balance on your credit card. That just puts more money in their pocket and less in yours. <*)))>< |

I would just pay it down if I have the extra cash. Good way to build credit and pay off a debt. |

put it on the credit card. |

better to pay down your credit card first |

In todays world you only make a one to 2 percent return on a savings account, if you are lucky. Your credit card is 400% higher, Pay it off, and you will gain a lot. |

It better to have a good savings account (8 months in reserve). Credit is only good to have, when you have a profitable way to pay it off. SO PAY OFF THE CREDIT CARD FIRST AND GET YOUR CREDIT SCORE UP TO MARK. Also remember if you have a small business loan you can build up credit with the bank and still pay off the loan with only the standard interest attached. And not put yourself in a deep hole of expenses. |

March? Thats a long time to have 0%.
Keep your savings, you never know when you'll need money for an emergency.
The 0% balance is an interest free loan, free money, just pay payments on the card until March.
Pay more than the minimum... And don't use the card....
Or as an alternative, you could do a half and half. Use half of your savings to pay down the balance of the card and keep the other half in savings. |

pay the credit card! Save yourself paying all that interest. |

Go with whichever is higher interest. If you can pay off the card before the interest kicks in, then leave the savings. Otherwise, you're going to be paying out more than your savings is earning in interest. |

I work with Citicorp Trust Bank and one of the things we focus on is helping consumers eliminate debt. If you want a free application to see if we can do anything to help you, I would go to a Primerica representative and ask about the SMART loan. Its free and there's no obligation to go ahead with the loan if you qualify.
If you don't want to take a look at the SMART loan, then I would do this: Pay off the high interest credit cards first. Do whatever you can to pay it off such as paying the minimum on the credit cards that has no or low interest and move the save money into high interest credit cards. |

While you may be cutting into savings to relocate, if you need to take out loans to relocate, then having a large balance on your credit score when they do a credit check is a bad thing. Try to pay off as much of the balance as possible while still leaving some money in savings for back up.
I'm not an expert in finances, so maybe you might want to talk to a financial advisor for some advice or ideas |

I would pay down the credit card as much as you feel comfortable with since to get an apartment you will probably be subject to a credit check. You can always draw
off the card if you need to after finding a place. |

Put the money in savings till March, then pay off the credit card. You might as well take advantage of the 0% interest. |
