Is it better to live above your means and be in debt or to live below your means and be debt free?

When you're young, it's hard to live debt-free (car, home), BUT . . .

o Always live below your means. Trying to keep up with the guy next door (who's probably deeply in debt) is a recipe for financial disaster

o Don't use credit cards unless it's for convenience and you have the cash in hand to pay them off each month

o As you get a little older and more established in your profession, try to eliminate all debt (except, perhaps, your mortgage. That may take a little longer to eliminate)

o Remember, MOST self-made millionaires lived a conservative lifestyle (below their means) most of their lives.

Veronica
Living within your means is always the best way. It's a balance. That way, you aren't depriving yourself and you aren't placing yourself in a precarious situation where if something unexpected comes up you can't handle it. Planning adequately for the future may involve living below your means but I can't think of a good reason why you should live totally above your means.

Below your means, you need to save in case of emergency.

When you live in debt you are pissing away 20% of your money to credit card companies.

Wow, 7 answers and everyone is WRONG. Live Happy, period.
You may not be here tomorrow, what good to have lots of money in the bank, live a boring life, and get run over by a bus tomorrow? As long as you can make the payments, I say live hard, be happy, and have fun!!!

rheymam
I'd say below your means and debt free. This way you really have nothing on your shoulders. Besides after the novelty of the new things you bought wear off, the only thing you are left with is the debt. fun huh!! the saying goes the best things in life are the simple things.

Live below and debt free

below means and debt free - too many folks have too grandiose ideas about what they "need" in life and spend too much on status symbols

there are ways to live comfrotably either way you can have class and be poor at least thats what i believe

Better way to ask the question: Do you want to be able to buy a house when you have a family or be stuck in a roach infested apartment becuase your credit is so badly messed up?

I would say most definitly not in debt

Mee~Dee
Hmmmmm-this is a tough one...Just being sarcastic! I truly believe for anyone to be happy financially, you MUST live below your means and have $$ in the bank. If you live above your means then there isn't any extra money for those unexpected things that life does and will throw at you!

Olivia Maer
Debt free is the best. What you'll have to do is spend within the capacity of your earnings. That is one way to keep us all debt free.

Buy only the necessary things like food, clothing medicine and a decent shelter. If you cannot afford to buy extravagant things like for leisure or fun, just settle on what you have so far. Rejoice in them like you have just recently purchased them. Remember how you felt when you first bought this thing.

Don't worry, you'll get the things you wanted in due time. Just be debt free.

how terrible it is for a man to own everything and yet lose his soul (or peace of mind).

Debt free is the life for me!!!!!!

Gooner
A little bit of debt is ok, so long as you are not paying too much back in interest. I have just got rid of all my credit cards and by the end of the year, after 3 years I will be loan free and £440 better off. It will be a great feeling. After experiencing being in debt, I would rather be debt free, but it still does not stop me from having what I want!!

dittmer007
quit listening to all these debt free answers. you only live on this earth a short time so why not make the most of it. in fact if you look at any civ in history everyone always lives above there means. isn't the US billions of dollars in debt right now. i think its funny that the everyone preaches stay debt free, but our society has historically almost never been debt free...its the way of the world...don't miss out

When I am young I think I can handle a little debt, but I would like to be debt free if I get older...say when I am 30.
