Is it common, or even possible, to take out money when paying by card in stores in the UK?
The reason I ask is that this is possible in other countries, and is quite a convenient way to get cash without having to go to an ATM. It might also be cheaper in terms of VISA fees, for example.

Does anyone know if this is commonly done, or if it is something that would be strange or not allowed? I would just like to know if I should expect to be able to do this...

Yes you can do it, it's called 'Cashback', however not all stores do it. Some of the ones I know of are Sainsburys, Tesco, The Co-op and Co-op Latestrore chains and Asda. You have to ask at the store to find out if they do it.
It does seem to be limited to the major chain supermarkets and I am not aware of having paid a fee for it like the Cashpoint machines(ATM's). Most of the Major Banks now have agreements and dont charge for withdrawels from cashpoint machines if you have Visa/Mastercard etc. accounts, it's just the ATM type machines in shops and Garages that charge for definate.
I hope you enjoy your time in the UK!

Yes, it's called cashback. Most big stores will do it.

webworm90
You can get cash back at stores that allow this.

The Visa Electron/Plus or Maestro now allows cash back at participating merchants.

You can use your Visa Electron/Plus and/or Maestro card on the internet without a pin at some merchants.

Depending on the Country. Maestro, Visa Plus and cirrus are used as the last resort. The computer tries your local network, regional network, and then the international network before your card gets denied. You may need to ask the Merchant to run it as a debit purchase and enter a pin to get cash back.

Yes with a debit card and USUALLY no with a credit card.
I have been to places, usually hotels, that will give you cash and recording the transaction as a purchase. This is helpful because
it saves on the higher interest rate - but whether it is technically legal or not is another thing!
I noticed that when we were in Australia, they would have usually one card that the transaction could be either debit or credit card.
Anyway, there are ATMs all over the place, so you shouldn't have a problem getting cash.

Yes but only with debit cards, not credit (visa/mastercard/amex etc).

mike-from-spain
Usually only in the major supermarkets, but it must be a debit card, not a credit card, who will always ask you if you want 'cash back' then just add it to your bill and give you the cash.. To get cash from a credit card you must use an ATM.

glynworsley@btinternet.com
Cashback. You can only do it on Debit Cards not Credit Cards.

Yes, as the others have said, it's called "Cash Back" and you can only have it back with a Debit Card, and there is a £50, limit.

Josie
Yes. It's called CASHBACK, but you can only usually do it in major stores, (supermarkets, etc..) and generally up to a maximum of £50.

womam12
yes most stores in the UK let you have up to £50 cash back!

clydachowl
you can do it but I do not think you can do it with charge cards(Axess, Visa, Mastercar, /amex etc) only with debit cards( Maestro, /solo,Etc)

When I was there in 1997, I couldn't CASHBACK with a visa electron. I had a bank card with the Royal Bank of Scotland which used the "SWITCH" system.
SWITCH is a debit card system much like visa electron or maestro, but the good thing is I could use it online or for postal orders (you cannot do that in visa electron or maestro) and CASHBACK. Its also a cheque gaurentee card.
nifty.

flymetothemoon279
cash back

Steve C
Large shops - mostly supermarkets offer a service called cashback when you use your debit card

You can do it, it's called cashback. normally in big stores they ask you if you want it. if they don't ask you then ask them. most pubs do cashback now which defo comes in handy. x

ndavos
Yes, you just ask for "cash back" when you pay with your card. Not all stores allow it but I always find small grocery/convenience shops will.

canada grl
probably not if your bank is from north america.....go to the bank and get it out with you card, as long as it is compatable.
keep in mind, this kind of technology is pretty delayed in the u.k........always take a back-up card, like a visa so you are not caught out.

jamie p
yes but they will only do cashback on debit cards...not credit cards
