I had a cheque sent to me but it has my name mispelled. I contacted the lady who sent it and she said that it is fine to change it. So is it illegal to change? |

no do not put tipex on a cheque you will make it invalid!! If you could use tippex on cheques dont you think everyone would be doing it.
If you do change the spelling of your name you will have to get the lady who sent you the cheque to initial the correction before it can accepted |

You should not alter the cheque! That is illegal. Instead, you are supposed to sign the mispelled name first and then sign again right below the first endorsement with the correct spelling of your name.
Otherwise, you must get the maker to send you a replacement cheque. |

Any alteration on a cheque has to be initialled by the sender....the bank will refuse to cash it if it is altered. |

As far as I'm aware it's not legal - it can only be changed by the person who wrote it and they have to sign it to confirm they've changed it.
Contact them again, just say the bank wouldn't accept it and you want it re-issued with your name spelt correctly, and send them the miss-spelled one back. |

Absolutely the bank or cheque exchange will not accept it!!! tell her to re send a cheque or do a bacs transfer direct into your account!! |

I would wait to get to the bank, and explain it to whoever you are cashing it with.
That we they are aware why you tampered with the cheque.. if not, you will have to send it back with a paper proof to the person that wrote it, to say that the check was for you in the first place, its a hassle. |

It would invalidate the cheque. Anybody could get hold of a cheque and alter it to their advantage if it was permissible! |
