Is it legal to charge 440% on a loan (UK)?
we just had one of those christmas hamper companies put a leaflet through our door offering high street vouchers at 143% interest and 440% on cash loans. and 59% ond small loans. it's not a miss print they gave examples.

t o
that doesnt sound right to me, i think you're missing the decimal point.
5.9%
44.0%
14.3%
sounds more like it. No one would ever sign up to a 440% loan therefor no one would ever do it.

I'm disagreeing with everyone else. Every financial institution has an obligation to fulfull FSA and BO standards and I very much doubt either of them would allow a 440% loan. Its just not possible.

If people are stupid enough to sign up to them, then yes, they are legal.

These companies are predatory - they thrive on peoples bad credit ratings and get them into even more trouble.

Leave well alone people

scragette2000
They can charge what they like if your stupid enough to do it.

Pinkle
Well I am fairly sure that it is not illegal to charge these kinds of rates. However it is highly immoral and obscene.

I personally think these kind of companies should be put out of business.

Usually they specialise in fairly small loans and prey on the vulnerable in society.

I would like to think that no matter how desperate someone was they would keep away from these kinds of offers, but sadly some people just look at how much a week they have to pay out and do not stop and think exactly how much they are paying.

Good to bring it to people's attention.

What a rip off. I think it is legal and people can charge what they want. That appears to be a dodgy loan shark, steer clear!

perfectly legal, companies charge loads for short term loans.

Mr Mills
They can charge as much as they like as, you sign beforehand to accept. That's why one should read the small print very carefully first.

440% your looking at bankcrupcy with those percentages.

never heard anything like that in my life.. dont trust them.

cluckincom
yes unbelievabley they can fleece you with whatever interest they like- pass info on to your local and national papers they might be interested.

Franco
Unlike most other countries, companies in UK are allowed to charge any thing they like and it is up to the borrower to look after himself. It is not for nothing that UK is called rip off Britain.

And it is for that reason that I advise foolish borrowers from such companies, to do anything they can not to pay them back.

Ozzy~
Wow.

Thats one heck of a rip-off.

Clown
It is illegal to charge that kind of interest.

they can charge whatever they want when people are desperate because they have screwed their record by not paying bills, if people want to not pay when theyre getting charged nothing or 13% then they have to pay in other ways
you can run from debt

As long as all terms are outlines in the contract and agreed to by both parties, it's all good.

This rate is excessive but there are no English laws against usury. Nevertheless the United Kingdom is subject to European law which includes a law against unfair contracts, I suspect this would fall within that category. Do you want to take up time and money fighting it through the European Courts? Avoid such thieves!
