Hi I am an international student and do not have a credit rating because I do not have a SSN, is the credit check for a phone plan really necessary or can I pay the entire subscription up front, I have a US bank account and debit card and various foreign credit cards and money is not an issue. |

Most phone companies will require a deposit to begin service if they don't like your credit or you don't have a credit history. If you are referring to a cell phone, nearly all companies currently offer pre-paid plans. Because these are paid in advance, credit is not an issue. You can also by 'throwaway' cell phones many places. You can by these with cash upfront and not even give your name. |

As a former Credit Manager and long time citizen of the U.S., here are some points:
1. For a LAN line with a phone company, all of the large ones want an SSN.
2. For a cellphone it is not necessary.Your Driver's license and a creditcard (or cash) and Bank Account are sufficient.
3. Now, if you want a large company such as AT&T for service, just call and ask a cust. serv. rep.. I'm sure I'm correct on the SSN, but there could be some changes with so very many foreigners here with Visa's. Also, if you have a Bank Acct. and a debit card , believe me, there is a credit file on you, so you should be ok there. Good luck. Just call and go for it. |

Many places will quote you a small deposit if you do not have credit. Not usually a big deal. AT&T here in the states seem to have the highest deposit with T-Mobile and Sprint having the lowest. |

i used to sell cell phones. People who had NO credit were either denied or required to pay a deposit of $150-$500 deoending on their credit history. This deposit is returned to u when your plan is over and u are no longer under contract.
if you dont want to worry about that u should consider Boost Mobile. Its a prepaid phone. they're pretty cheap in price for unlimited talk and text. here's the website

Credit is a good thing to have, but if you don't some cell carriers give you a spending limit, or will have you put down a security deposit.
what ever works to start building credit. I am all for it.

Wireless phone companies do check your credit before issuing you a contract. Good credit normally means no problems getting a plan. Bad credit may mean having to put down a security deposit. If you have no social security number than your only option would be to do prepaid. The wireless companies have to have a social security number for collection purposes. |

either way though there are plans like Metro PCS or prepaid phone you can get |
