bethanymchaney | Is it ok that my soon-to-be ex-husband made us keep seperate bank accounts and made me pay the house payment? |
My husband had us keep seperate banking accounts so that I could pay the house payment out of my money. Is this fair? Additional Details All the bills are in my name. I now have to file bankruptsy because I can't afford to keep the house and pay all the credit cards HE ran up. He said he would pay all the bills except the house...however, that rarely happened. He only worked two weeks out of the year we were married. He sold on Ebay instead. |

Makes a telling case for you getting the house though; or at least a larger share of the proceeds. |

If you get to keep the house, then I guess it's fair. |

Well, lets here the full story here. What bills is he paying? How much is your house payment and is that the only thing he is asking you to pay? Why not have one account for the bills, one account for your spending and one for his? |

It's going to better for you if the payments have been on time.
You need to talk with a divorce attorney and get professional accurate advice.
Good luck. |

I would definitly consult a lawyer that specializes in this area. sometimes if you incur a debt during a marriage both parties are responsible. Depends on the state. |

No! I would speak to my lawyer. Is this part of the divorce settlement? That you keep the house and the payment? Is he giving you any money? Do you have children? Be careful when it comes time to file your taxes; as you are paying for the house you should be able to deduct the entire finance charge from your tax return. Including the property taxes, etc.
Good Luck! I married a slacker also, he stayed in bed for two years and we lost our dream home in the hills. Had to file bankruptycy. We are now living in my Parents home. And yes, dummy that I am, we are still married. 34 years and hating it!
Actually if I were divorcing. I would want separate Bank accounts. I would want to keep the finances straight. If he is making payments to you in the form of spousal or child support I would keep very good records.
Good Luck! Hang in there! You can do it alone! |

I have known many families like this. I do not personally subscribe to this philosophy. Me and my wife both work and we pool our income for whatever needs may arise. I do not like separate accounts but if it works for someone more power to them. |

I DONT THINK THATS THE REAL REASON YOU BOTH HAD SEPARATE ACCOUNTS
GOOD THING YOU MIGHT CLAIM THE INTEREST ON YOUR TAX RETURN GIVING YOU A BIGGER RETURN
GET AN ATTORNEY AND ASK THEM WHAT THEY THINK
GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF |

Was this an agreed upon decision? He just didn't make you do this out of the blue. Maybe he knew something you didn't. This will make a good case on your part with the divorce decree to keep the house because you mainly paid the mortgage. As for me, I have the same situation by choice. My boyfriend can not hold on to a nickel. This was a way for me to make sure that the mortgage was paid and on time. Now if he had other plans for his money besides pay the rest of the household bills then I think you should have addressed this situation way before with your soon to be ex-husband. Maybe that's why you are divorcing for "financial reasons". Good Luck. |

well, between me and my husband - with my checks comming in weekly and his bi-weekly, mine usualy pays the bills and his pays the gas, food, needs and ect. but we do not have a separate bank account and not just my money goes toward bills. i make him pay his own car payment and he makes me pay my own loan payments, but other then that - we pitch in when help is needed. having two kids, its harder to manage money on who does what because emergencies pop up occasionaly. if you have kids, then its okay, but if he is saving his own money and making you spend all of your money for yours and his bills - then thats when he has crossed the line. but if he is leaving you, then atleast thank him for helping you manage your house payment. if only you paid for the house, then rightfuly its more yours than it is his. |

Is it ok? Sure, if you agreed to it.
Will it have any affect on your divorce? It certainly could. It's a strong argument for you to keep the house, or for you to get the larger portion of the income from the sale, though if it's roughly the same as the bills he's paying it might not.
Some people are okay with separate accounts, others are not. Deciding if it's okay is strictly up to the people involved. |
