Is it possible for a person to live on a salary of $13250?
That's the minimum wage in New York City before taxes. Could someone actually live on that?
Additional Details
I don't actually work for minimum wage. I'm just trying to give awareness to people on why the minimum wage should be increased. They're already doing it in California.

You'd have to be creative, but a single person can pull it off.

It'd be harder for anyone with kids to do it.

Somoe other examples:

Housesitting, Live-in maids, Au Pairs,

Not a chance in hell. You'll be earning around 10k after taxes.. you will not be able to rent a box for $833 a month in NYC. Forget eating and everything else... its impossible.

Mrs Apple
Nope. You need to calculate your monthly expenses: rent, utilities, gas, food, clothes, necessities...It's impossible. You'll definately need to get a second job with that income.

Define "live".

Where in the 5 boroughs do you live in first of all. I live in Manhattan and would not think that 13,000 dollars even after taxes is enough. Maybe you might work in the city but you might want to consider living outside of the city.

tracieghall66
Live? Maybe with roomates and a very tight budget. Thrive is another thing.

butch
actually it depends where you live and what your expenses (don't forget food and gas for the car) - are for a month x 12( for a year) -that would tell you if you can live on that amount - and how much would be left over if an emergency arose would that kill your budget

maybe not in NY city but here in michigan yes still a struggle but not as much so. in ny city you probley get a cardboard box for that here at least you would be able to get a little bit more lol. May have few roaches in though. lol

richp
Sure, that's $255.00 a week before taxes. You can easily live on that if 1] You live in a card board box, 2] Rummage thru trash for food, 3] Have no need for more than 2 shirts and one pair of slacks, 4] Never do any thing entertaining. Have a great life.

ed
If head of a houshold, many live on less, but damned lean on that amount.

sgarrido0718
well with new york being so expensive, im sure u could but u would always be really tight on money. you'd basically be living off paycheck to paycheck....but i doubt it's impossible...

Yes. I live on $12,331.20 a year (Social Security check). Of course, I live in New Haven, Indiana - not New York City. -RKO- 08/16/07
