Is it possible for a single person to live off $100-$150 a month on groceries?
I'm wondering if this is possible because I will be moving out on my own in February and I've heard that a single person spends about $250-$300 a month.

If you plan your meals and cook at home, $150 sounds reasonable.

My g/f and I spend around $250 a month, but we also tend to buy organic which is more expensive. Mind you we both cook and we eat out once a week, and order food maybe once a month.

It's pretty easy for a single person to only spend $100-150 a month on groceries, although it's also easy to spend much more than that. Just make sensible choices at the grocery store and you'll be fine.

150 a month easy.

Find substitutes for meat in your meals... Peanuts, peanut butter are cheap. Canned tuna is very healthy and filling and cheap. Eat it for dinner 1 or 2 times a night. You can make Tuna salad pretty quickly with some pasta noodles, a can of tuna, and mayo or miracle whip and a vegetable like carrots, onions and/or celery.

Invest in tupperware. Cook a whole chicken on Sunday. Cut it in half after it cools down. Seperate the meat and freeze it so you can warm it up and eat it on Thursday or Friday. Use the rest of the left overs for chicken sandwiches or too mix with pasta on M-T-W by bagging it and putting in fridge.

Eggs are very good for you and cheap. Think, a dozen costs 2 or 3 dollars. Make 2 eggs for breakfast every other day and that will last two weeks.

Generic cereal is just as good as the name brand stuff.

Pasta is cheap and filling and good.

- When my daughters mom and I first got our own place, we wasted a lot of money on veggies and fruit that spoiled very before we could eat it. Apples are a great fruit, because in the fridge, they have long shelf life. Do not over buy things like bananas and oranges if you are not going to eat them.

Also, you are probably better off going to the grocery store with just a little bit of cash every few days, instead of blowing 50 or 75 dollars every two weeks and buying foods you will not eat or do not want.

30 days in a month / 150 dollars = 5 dollars a day. So, if you take 20 dollars every 4 days to the grocery store, you will always be getting fresh food and not buying things you do not like.

Example - it may seem like a good idea to get 5 boxes of cereal for 10 bucks, instead of 1 box for 3. But, odds are you will get sick of all 5 boxes if they are only a couple of choices. You will be stuck with cereal you are not eating, but bought because it was cheap and on sale. You will end up going back to grocery store - or worse McDonald's, because you are sick of corn flakes. You are sometimes, a lot better off spending a little more money on food you will eat all of and enjoy, than buying bulk of things that you won't like or won't eat.

very possible; My roommate and I survived off of $150 for 3 weeks. We also ate very healthy.

You can do this. You budget your money for food by putting it in an envelope so that you don't overspend. You pick discounted food stores and look for discounts by buying in bulk. You're looking at Aldi, Angelfood ministries and other programs in your area that will boost your food supply on low income such as food pantries.

I live off 130 or so a month for groceries... The only catch you wont be buying filet mignons or t-bones... but alot of premade foods like chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, most anything that says add water and enjoy... top ramens ... You'll stop buying coca cola and start drinking store brand sodas.. things like that... But it can be done... 250-300 is buying better things to eat, like your t-bone, so its up to you how u want to eat.

ladybugewa
As long as you cook and eat at home, and put in the effort to make most things from scratch instead of buying processed (canned, frozen, freeze-dried) $150 will keep you not only fed but healthy.

Just Wondering
You would have to be very careful and sacrafice to survive on $5.00 per day, but it is possible. Focus on healthy foods so that you don't suffer nutrition-wise, which could lead to higher healthcare cost. Thus eliminate "empty carbs" which are foods and drinks with no nutritional value (soda pop, cake, cookies, chips, etc.).

Maybe the typical American, who eats often out, more often and too much.

Well, it somewhat depends on where you live, but I can't really see being able to eat for less than $5 per day. I would plan on at least $200/month minimum.

Pretentia
Its really going to depend on where you live and what you eat. When I was in university I lived on about that much per month, but I ate a lot of rice and potatoes, mac and cheese and instant noodles. It was starch city.

mitchell111405
Absolutely! I live in a family of four, and we spend about 50-60 bucks a week on groceries. Planning meals and clipping coupons can save you big bucks. Pay attention to what is on sale, and go shopping on days that you can double your coupons. It takes some time and effort, but you could do it.

Mob_boss
yep, shop at aldis if you have one near you. biglots or discount food stores. buy off brand labels and you could alway stick to raman noodles every day with vitamins, raman noodles is bout .25 cents a pack
