Justcurious78 | Is it possible to bounce a check and not know it? |
I wrote a personal check to an ex-friend. She claims that my check bounced and that I now owe her a 33 dollar fee for the bounced check as well. My bank has no record of the check even being deposited. I have never overdrawn or ever had a problem like this. I am concerned that she has been ripped off by someone at another bank or a check cashing place, etc. I am extremely reluctant to give her any money for any "fee" because I think she just maybe lying.....
Any ideas or insight? |

Your friend is not really your friend. |

Yeah, tell her to show you some proof. If your bank has no record of the check clearing how could it have bounced. You would be charged additional fees to your account. I think something fishy is going on, dont give her the money. |

she's totally lying, if she depositited it then you would have a record. If it really did bounce, you would probably have some kind of overdraft protection to cover the check in which case you would be charged a fee of $20-33 by your bank.
So she is just trying to rip you off, don't give her any more money. |

i would ask for PROF that it bounced before i would give her any money they would have sent you something in the mail if it bounced or call your bank and ask them about it and i would not give her money unless you are sure it bounced |

i would say she is lying. when a check bounces, your financial institution covers you, and then they charge you a fee like $20-$30. You wouldn't owe her. i would tell her to buzz off, but in a more professional, polite way. she's trying to scam you. |

When a check "bounces" there are several things that happen.
First, you will see a NSF charge on your account ~ believe me, no matter how good of a customer you are, the computers will automatically ding you that fee which ranges between $35-45.
You will also receive a paper notice in the mail from the bank, stating that the check bounced and you've been assessed this fee.
Your bounced check is then mailed back to the depositing bank who in turn, mails it to your friend with a big old red "NSF" stamped on the front. If your friend deposited it in her checking account, the amount of the check is withdrawn from her account plus a $15 (if any) processing fee.
If your check did indeed bounce, then she would have the check in her hands along with a statement from her bank. If she doesn't have this, then she is lying :)
I am guessing at a couple likely scenarios here: the first is that she has to cash it at a checking cashing place who tried to nick her with a $33 service charge. She doesn't want to take the hit, and is trying to strong arm you into paying that fee. The second, is that someone else's check bounced and she either got confused or mixed up.
The fact that your check has never cleared, plus there is no record of a bounced check charge tells me that she's trying to pull a fast one. |

maybe she could be lyin i think that you should check with your bank and see how much money you have in your account...,,or just ask for a copy of your bank statement |

If it did bounce, you would not owe HER the fee, you would owe your bank the fee. |

Find out what bank she tried to deposit it in, and go investigate yourself. |
