Is it safe to deposit cash in the ATM machine?

Just wondering because sometimes people have problems putting cash in the atm.

I work during normal banking hours, so I do all my banking after regular business hours. I do all my transactions through the atm. Which involves depositing checks and cash. I have NEVER had an issue.

It is very safe, as long as it is your bank's ATM, and you get a receipt for every deposit made (very important).

yep i do it every week... the amount you enter gets recorded on the atm.. no one can steal your money. you put the cash in an envelope with a deposit slip.

sanderst... is wrong. It is very safe to deposit cash in the ATM machine. You get a receipt for it. The banks have two people that count the money that is deposited and it is very unlikely that they will both agree to record you transaction wrong and take your money.

Customers do it all the time without incident and banks swear it is 100% safe.

The truth is that if there is ever an error in the accounting, it is IMPOSSIBLE to prove it, and you will never get your money from the bank.

Granted, ATM errors are rare but they do happen. If you aren't depositing large sums and aren't living hand-to-mouth, it's probably an acceptable risk to take.

Just keep in mind, if there's a bank error--you've lit a match to your money.

EDIT: I said mistakes are rare, but they do happen (I know from personal experience). And yes you get a receipt, but I could put an envelope with an empty gum wrapper in it and say it was $500 and get a receipt from it.
