It is occasionally required by legitimate businesses for the purpose of verifying your identity. If it's a legitimate business and he contacted them, the odds of that information being misused are relatively low.
If they called him asking for that information, that's a different story. They have that information on file, so there's no reason they'd need to ask him for it. This is how they can use your social security number for identity verification--if you call them asking for products or services, they can require you to recite your social security number before divulging information. If the number you recite doesn't match what's shown on their screen, they won't proceed with the transaction. |

Is the phone service legitimate? If so, then yes, because they need the social security number to be able to access his credit report to determine if he needs to make a deposit or not. So yes, if the company is legitimate then it is very common for process to take place. |

Most cell phone services do ask for your social security number so they can do a credit check. If it was a ligit cell phone service then it should be fine. |

With legit companies it is bc they have taken the precautions that they will be the only ones to see or use the ssn or cc numbers. There sites are safe. Be sure to clear the browser and all if he entered it online. Most of the time he will have to call them to give them the information. He shouldn't have a problem with it. It is very unsafe for untrusted companies though. Never give out that info if you have not studied their site or if you have not used them before. |

yes, as long as you called them and know of the company and know they are legit. Never give it to them if the called you, such as telemarketers. Because, it could a scam. They only need it to check your credit for service. After that they will only ask for the last 4 digits when you call for security reasons. |

If he was ordering the phone in person, all they would have needed to see was a driver's license to make sure it was him. I would be cautious about giving a social security number to order something. |
