There are some legit web sites out there that don't spam you like crazy and pay you for your time on surveys. I have actually gotten paid 4 or 5 dollars on one. The important thing is just to keep common sense, do not offer up any information they don't seem to need, like your SSN and make sure its worth it, this type of thing will most likely not make you rich or even give you any spending money. Like I said, I think I got around 4-5 dollars in about a year of being signed up for another site so take from that what you will.

CD - That's Me!
There are dozens of survey sites available, but you have to avoid the ones that are scams. Don't waste your time on any sites that require you to sign up for "special offers" before completing surveys. Also you should NEVER have to provide credit card information or make any payments to sign up to complete surveys. A list of good survey companies (I have tried them all) is here: http://thriftyjinxy.blogspot.com/2008/03/how-to-earn-extra-money-with-on-line.html

Maggie
Do you have to pay them a membership fee? If yes, stay away. They are not survey site, they just give you a list of paid survey sites.. You don't have to pay anyone for such list, since there are many free lists out there such as http://www.mysurvey123.com - it has free lists of legit survey sites with reviews and rating, articles of guide and advice. You never have to pay anyone to take surveys and get paid.

i found the best way to make money online just by doing surveys. i know most people find it untrue and most sites say you have to pay them to register for the site. not this one. everything is totally free and i encourage everyone to check it out for themselves. i did alot of research to find out how to earn "free money" by just sitting my lazy butt at the computer since im always sitting here anyway. so this is the best site that i found so far...give it a try it wont hurt.

I take on surveys every day and I have found them to be very safe. I live in Australia, so we don't have the number of survey sites that are available in USA.

I have listed some on my blog
feel free to visit it if you want to.

Most online survey sites are scams. Never ever ever pay to join a survey site.

There are legitimate survey sites out there, however you will usually only be able to make around 10-30 dollars a month per site.

Below is a partial list of legitimate online survey companies with no sign up fees and that will never make you pay a dime:

Survey Savvy
Haris Poll Online
Greenfield Online
Opinion Outpost
Survey Spot
Buzzback
NPD Online
Lightspeed Panel
Your2Cents

Feel free to use a search engine to visit their websites and sign up, or you can visit my website at:

http://www.earnontheside.com/?page_id=13

I am personally a member of all of these sites and many more and have received payment or rewards from all of them.
I have reviews for over 15 sites with detailed information including:

Rating (1-5 Stars)
Survey Participation Method
Payment Type
Payment Method
Minimum Payout
Average $ Per Survey
Survey Invitation Frequency
Referral Program
Minimum Age

I don't charge you anything for this information, but I have worked very hard compiling it, so hopefully you will bookmark it and share with your friends.

Yes its safe but usually takes long time to accumulate large wealth(ie there are very few surveys and there is huge time gap between surveys)
