Is it safe to trust Paypal with a debit card number?
Is it safe to trust Paypal with a debit card number?

It is safe to trust Paypal with a credit card number... but NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use a debit card for online purchases.

Debit cards are not legally secured. If a bad transaction takes place and you use a debit card... once the transaction is made, there is nothing to protect you to get your money back.... its just like if you handed over cash, once its gone, there is no way to get it back.

Credit cards are different, the credit card company is responsible for bad transactions and you are not held liable.

Some banks will voluntarily assist you get your money back, but they are not bound to it... Same holds true with Paypal. Paypal has a great reputation of making good on bad transactions, but there is no gurantee.

A few years back my wife pruchased a Luis Vutton handbag through ebay and paid through Paypal. She paid with a debit card. When the bag showed up it was an obvious counterfit. We contacted ebay and Paypal, and the money had already been transferred, the suspened the account and told us to work with our bank. Our bank was not willing to work with us, and we lost our money.

ALWAYS use a credit card, NEVER use a debit card online.

Here are a few other articles explaining why using Debit Cards online is dangerous

As long as you make sure to protect your paypal password, it should be safe.

I've used my debit card with paypal for years and have never had a problem.

Yes, PayPal is like a financial intermediary and you can hold them accountable in case of any trouble. But I use it all the time without any problem.

It is 100% safe, I've been using pay pals for 3 months now and buying all sorts of random stuff off ebay!

Its an awesome service.

Megan M
yes pay pal is the worlds best online credit company

Gunner PAD
yes. it is a secure service used by millions. your only concern is from hackers if you have a wireless conection but it is no less safe than going to an ATM, there are devices that some people put on ATMs to get your card and pin details.

so in other words its fine.

I had a nightmare with Pay Pal. I bought an item off ebay with Pay Pal, and my credit card got hit for over two different purchases in Europe for over $1000 each. I had to cancel my card, had to fill out a fraud claim, it took months to resolve. I was able to contact the individuals in Europe, and they had a similar experience. They shipped their goods, but the pay pal hadn't paid them. They lost on both ends. Most people swear by Pay Pal, I have talked to several people with nightmare stories like me. I always send a money order or cashiers check now.
