Snif | Is it true, that if I pay-off a credit card at the end of every month, I won't have to pay any interest? |
I'm thinking of getting a credit-card but I'm wary because of the horror stories I hear about people destroying their lives with it. I want to know if this is really true about paying off a credit card in full at the end of the month will result in zero interest for that month |

If you pay off your entire balance by the due date listed on your bill (it's not necessarily the "end of the month") then you will not pay any interest on purchases. I specify purchases because cash advances almost always charge you interest immediately.
That period is called a "grace period".
I've only paid interest a handful of times, and I've been using credit cards since I was 17.
Way to think responsibly. :0) |

If you pay by the specific payment due date on your bill (not always the end of the month) you will pay no interest. It si very valuable to have credit cards (used responsibly) because it establishes your credit rating, and they are necessary for certain items (rtenting a car, paying for a hotel room, etc.). They also offer safety (not having to carry cash) and other rewards, like frequent flyer points. |

Yes, look at the back of the credit card offer and you'll see a chart with all the terms in it. Look at the grace period. Usually it is somewhere between 20-30 days if paid in full.
This means that from the day the statement closes for the month, you have 20-30 days to pay the bill in full to avoid all interest charges. If you carry any balance, you pay interest on everything.
If you keep track of your spending and pay the bill in full and on time every month, you won't pay any interest.
Just be careful. Most of the horror stories you hear are people who spent money they didn't actually have, then they couldn't pay the card off at the end of the month and they get nailed with interest charges and penalties. |

Yes thats right! You are going to be saving lots of $ by not paying any interests. Not only that but you will develop a good habit of paying off your bills on-time too. Think of it.. You pay off your credit-card right away all the time will eventually lead to your lender INCREASING your credit limit as well. When that happens, your credit card lender will report your goodstandings to the credit bureau's and your credit score CAN/WILL increase. |

correct. you can also get credit cards that allow you 0% for a certain intro period.
However, as you say be very careful with the little blighters - make sure you do have the money to clear the balance and do so as soon as possible |

This depends entirely on the terms of the card. |

If you pay the full amount due, no interest will be charged. Carrying over a balance is what causes the problem with interest being charged! If you can't pay off the full amount and only pay the minimum fee, then the charge will be on the amount you still owe and you will never pay off the balance if you end up having to pay only the minimum. |
|

Here there and everywhere
 |
In general yes it's true.
But make sure it's a card with an interest free period (almost all are) and NEVER EVER withdraw cash using a credit card, as you WILL be charged interest at some rate like 30% APR until it is paid back in full. (There is usually NO interest free period on a cash advance. Cash from an bureau de change also counts as a cash advance.)
If you have self control then you can use a credit card just like a debit card, if it's paid off in full every month.
Don't bother getting a card where you have to pay a fee every year - get one that pays you back a small percentage of what you spent in the last year. (Usually only 1%, but it's like giving yourself a 1% pay rise for free.) |

It's true, as long as you pay the full amount on the statement for that month, I had mine for years and not once paid interest.
The above is also true, I started off on £500 and I now have £3000.
I only use it, knowing I have the money to pay it off. |

yes, that's correct!! |

You need to pay off the full balance before the interest cut off date. INterest is calculated in advance and then charged at the end of the month. Best thing to do is not to use them, its ok to have one but just leave it for emergancies. Even those who pay off there balances each month can run into trouble at some point. Just stick to cash and debit cards. |
