cygnet217 | Is it weird that my husband and I keep our money (almost) entirely seperate? |
We've been married for over 2 1/2 years. We're fairly young, 24 and 25. We do have one joint account, a certificate of deposit that was a wedding present from his parents for a down payment toward a house someday. That is the only joint account we have. We both have our own checking and our own savings. When we go out to dinner, we take turns paying the bill. He pays the rent/car payments/insurance. I pay electric/gas/all groceries. My mother thinks we're weird for not having joint accounts, but this works for us. We don't want to have to bicker about who's spending money on what, so with seperate accounts we can do what we want with our own money without having to discuss it with each other first.
Do most other couples combine their accounts? We're happy with our current system... |

Completely combining everything is a hassle to track - I think it causes more problems than anything. There are definitely benefits with having some separate accounts - I wouldn't want to know every little thing my wife (not married) buys. On the other hand, I think one joint account for at least major bills would be a good idea - or backup of one or the other runs low on cash. So, you may want to consider doing one combined account you both contribute to, for the combined or household purchases. |

I think it's a great system. I am planning on doing something similar when I get married. A joint account to pay combined bills from...and then seperate accounts for the rest of it. It might not be "normal" but if it works for you, keep it up! |

I think that if this works for you then its nobodys buisness! Me and My husband have seperate accounts! He has a spending problem lol so I like to keep it this way! lol |

I think what matters is it's working.
As long as you guys are happy with your situation there is no reason to change status quo.
Rima- Chivarly has nothing to do with paying your bills. |

My hubby and I have separately accounts too though we've been talking since forever about applying for joint account just for the shared, common expenses. I believe this is the common practice in my country (Malaysia, Singapore). At least I haven't know any couples here who combine their accounts. I had a very tough time trying to convince a friend in Australia the benefits of keeping separate accounts from his future wife, in addition to the joint account. Because like you said, the couple doesn't have to argue about how the money is spent. But he said he just couldn't understand why couples should have separate accounts. |

A lot of couples are doing this these days. If it works for you, then great! |

I think perhaps you both should have your own accounts and one account that you both share. The shared account could be used for joint activities. |

As long as you agree on who pays what, you're good. However, who's in charge of adding to the savings account for the house?
I can tell you that I usually have money and my BF does not. We have similar incomes, but he's less likely to have cash. The fallout is that I pay more than he does. I resent it. |

If it isn't broken why fix it? |

Why try to fix it if it isn't broke?
As long as you and your husband have open and honest communication regarding who pays what and when, that's all that matters. |

We combined our accounts immediately. I work, he works, there is no bickering on who's spending what.... It's our money and our stuff. And I don't have to discuss anything first, although I do think that is a curtousy for big ticket items, like a car. Due to my hobby, which is expensive, I spend more than him on non household items, but that is just the way it is...
But whatever works for you, works for you.. don't listen to anyone else. What you described wouldn't work for me. |

I would say keep your accounts separate. Maybe if your would like keep a joint account for bills only but i would keep a majority of your funds in your own account. Mainly if your ever get divorced or separated, A joint account is exactly that , joint. Either person can come and close the account and withdraw all if the funds. It is not required to have both parties there. Also if either ever has a dept that goes to collections the levy will be put on all accounts they have INCLUDING joint accounts. Even if that person has none of there money in it, bc there a joint owner it can be seized. I'm not saying anything is wrong with either of you, I work in a bank, and I see this all the time. I'm just a neutral party and I would suggest keeping it separate. A joint account just for bils I say is all you might need, but for all the money? no. Keep it separate. |

My husband and I combine ours, but no, you are not weird.
My best friend in high school had parents like you. Their money was 100% separate and they divided the bills like you. They didn't even share a last name, though they were married. (Mom kept her maiden name.) In fact, they even gave their daughter (my friend, an only child) the mom's last name as the father had lots of brothers to "carry on" his name, but the mom didn't. :) My friend is/was the only bill they "shared". :)
As long as it works for you all and you are happy with your system and your bills get paid, it shouldn't be a problem for any one else. :) |

don't worry about it. if it works for you and your husband then its fine. alot of married couples keep seperate accounts and the way you describe it seems very sensible to me |

What is the point of getting married if you are going to live like you are still dating.
Most married couples combine everything. |
