Tom L | Is it wise to spend my money? |
i'm in high school and i work over the summers and and a little less during this school year. i spend almost none of my money. i could by plenty of clothes and stuff but i dont "need" them and i feel like i need to save it all for something important. im talking about like less that 5000 but my question is should i spend this money? like will the money i made in high school in the grand scheme of things really matter? i started thinking and ill be working for the rest of my life even through college and i think ill be covered and this money wont really matter. |

Before spending your $$, consider the recession we are in. It will get worse before it begins to get better and you may need those funds later as the economy gets tighter. Spend a little on yourself, yes - you earned it and you should treat yourself well with what you earn, just spend it wisely. Especially given the unfortunate state of our economy. Good for you, btw, for saving. A very good and responsible habit to be in! To echo another poster here, most people today spend as much as they make. They live outside of their means. Never a good idea. The trick is to spend your money on what you need, spend a little on what you want, and save the rest. You're on the right track. Good job! |

actually Tom, the spending habits that you develop now will drive you life for success or failure for the rest of your life. YOu need to start a habit of saving some, spending some (i don't mean on "stuff you don't really need) but investments that will help you get ahead you'll know them when you see them- nothing is more frustrating than to have a fantastic opportunity fall in your lap and you be too broke to take advantage of it. Start reading what the millionaires say; Robert Kyosoki, Brian Tracy, Jim Floor there are lots ot choose from. Right now your best investment is in knowledge about financial strategies and how to make them work for you. Do some research and if you learn and apply the knowledge, you could be retired by the time most of your friends start their second or third j.o.b. ( stands for Just Over Broke) Luck and Learning to you CR |

Eventually you should spend it, but if you don't have a reason to spend it right now, why should you? Wait until there is a reason. There are cool things you can do with that money, like sign up for a school trip to someplace cool, or if your school doesn't offer those trips, seek out some of the organizations that take students on trips to other countries. That will look really great on your college application and speaking as someone who took two such trips, I highly recommend you do that. I learned so much about myself, other cultures, and I think I really matured in a new way at that point in my life.
Bear in mind that if you still have that money when you apply to college, and if you are looking for financial aid at that time, they will take that money into account before they give you financial aid. If you won't be applying for financial aid, this is not a big deal. Worst comes to worst, they will give you less loans for college, but that will be money that you don't have to pay back.
Here are some organizations that offer study abroad programs for High Schoolers

Save !!!! Invested at 15% annually, this amount could grow to 1.2 million by retirement age even if you never add to it. And 15% is very achievable f you are clever. What you have going for you is time. Learn about investment compounding.
Also, having some money in the bank is the difference between a comfortable life and being poor. Poor people have something come up and it devastates them They cant get the car fixed, so they end up paying for taxis to get to work. Or they can only take a lousy job, because those are the ones near the bus routes. They cant afford new tires/brakes and then have a car crash and end up in the hospital. They cant afford health insurance, so they miss a lot of work due to minor sickness that gets worse. They have to shop at the local store instead of driving to where the bargains are. They miss credit card payments or pay taxes late and pay HUGE penalties. The irony is that it is more expensive to be poor, but so many of them refuse to save a dollar and get out of the trap. Need I go on?
Twe books to read:
The RIchest Man in Babylon
The MIllionaire Next Door.
THESE are worth spending a few dollars on !!!! |

It all depends on what you need. You might need a car sometime or a computer, otherwise just save. Put the money in the bank if you already haven't, it will grow quickly. Base your spending on priority, if you don't need it don't buy it. That is the problem with some people they just go spend their money on stuff they don't need. |

Maybe you could save it for college or a down payment on a house, cause a mortgage is always cheaper than rent, and then you'll get to keep your home compared to your landlord making money. Times are going to get tougher so money in the bank never hurts. Good luck, but I don't think you'll need it cause you sound very responsible. So good job. Keep up the good work. |

There is nothing wrong with spending some of your income on things you want. Since you already have saved some cash I would say hang on to that nest-egg.
$5,000 is a very minimal amount of cash for an emergency fund, and you will be way ahead of everyone else your age when you graduate, and want to get your first place of your own.
Edit - John Galt has an excellent reading list below. |

You are doing a good job by saving the money. Is spending money a wise thing or not? It is a hard question. If you are spending money on things that you need it is wise but if you spending money on things you don't need then it is not a wise decision.
If you need something like a computer that can benefit you in your study then you can spend the money.
Future is uncertain so having some savings can really be helpful. |

If you want to spend some money then do it, but spend wisely. Make sure you only buy what you really like and want. Also, you don't have to spend all of it- you could go buy yourself a really nice outfit, spend $200, and then save the rest. If you want to be really smart with your money then save it- put it in a high interest savings account, cd, or even stocks and bonds. Pay off any college loans as soon as possible and you'll be very well off once you want to make a big purchase: like a house or new car. But if you really don't feel like saving the money, then yes, it is okay to reward yourself! You could even take it to go on a nice vacation... |
