The reality is that it's NOT alot of money. Sure it will go further in a place like Alabama than in Los Angeles but the bottom line is if you are thinking about 2 or more kids and a stay at home wife it will be TOUGH on that income. |

lower middle class for a single person maybe 2 but a family to be lower middle class i'd say 50000 to 60000 for 3 and 60000 to 80000 for 4 after that anything over 100000 is pretty good id say you would make alot more if you jioned the military as a pilot cause youd get free schooling/ training. and your family would be taken care of, plus when you got out you could probably be a pilot for a major airline, ect |

that is not a lot of money for a family. If you live in the deep south it will go a lot further than if you live in New York city though. $30k is the equivalent of making $15/hr. |

It totally depends on cost of living of your part of the country, your life style, and how you manage your debt.
The amount that you said is pretty good for certain parts of the country with a lower cost of living, but totally inadequate for some parts of the country such as my own, the San Francisco Bay Area, with a very high cost of living. On the other hand, I'm always surprised at how far some people have learned to stretch a dollar.
If that's just a starting salary, you can expect salary increases (hopefully), which would be reasonable with time in a higher cost of living area. |

It really depends on the cost of living where you are. Some places you'd be comfortable on that, and other places, you'd be scraping by in a tiny apartment. |

No, that is entry-level pay for a college grad. If you and your spouse both make $40K, then you should be comfortable. Certainly not rich, but you should get by - depending on where you live. |

You have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T. What kind of cutbacks can you make? For example: I drink bottled water. Now at $1 a bottle on something that covers over 65% of our planet is not smart. So I bought one of those water filters that screw into your faucet. I have bottles that I refil over and over again. I take them to work. Do you have a lot of small appliances around that house that are always on? I cut my electronic bill almost in half by unplugging all the clock radios and night lights. I also bought some of those florescent bulbs that look a lot like a regular bulb. These things use 80% less electricity than regular bulbs. You would be surprised, but these small things add up. I know I was spending money on the water filter and energy efficient bulbs but these things will pay for themselves in a month providing they pertain to you. If you really need the money right away start cutting back on your food costs. Romain noodles cost a dime and they taste just as good as campbells chicken noodle that costs $130 a can. Ok no chicken in romain noodles, but you are probably just missing about 4 tiny pieces of chicken. Put a brick inside your toilet 'chamber'. You will use a little lesser water each time you flush..Before you know it you will be ahead. Wanna be creative? Find yourself leaving lights on? Buy a motion sensor switch, the lights will turn on when you enter the room and will turn off (by a set amount of time) when you leave the room. I have one, they cost $15 at HomeDepot. Need new windshield wipers for your car? Who says you have to buy 2? You only need the new one on the drivers side, leave the old wiper on the passenger side. So remember you have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T! Yours truly seahorsehawrey. |

You can get by on $30,000 - $45,000. However, I'm pretty sure experienced commercial pilots make more than that.

Though by the time you have children you will probably have more income from your spouse. |

It depends where you live. In my town even computer programmers only make 10 to 12 an hour, so 30,000 to 45,000 would be very good money. (No, the cost of living here is not low, most here are working poor, this includes college grads).. In NYC, 30,000 to 45,000 would not be a lot. |
