Is retirement in the future impossible?
I'm 27 and I just started to think about retirement planning, it seems to me that saving for retirement will be impossible, you need so much money, I feel overwhelmed at how much money we need to save to retire comfortably. :-/

Look online for a "retirement calculator".
Many website offer them, like Money.com.
I also found one that gave you a ball park figure.

I hope that you have access to 401k savings, and if you don't, that you try a Roth IRA.

I am older than you, and I have never had a job that offers 401k, nor have I been able to make an significant savings efforts. I live paycheck to paycheck.

Anyway, I have heard that trying the "one third" approach is a great way to save money. Take your monthly wages, after taxes, and you should be spending 1/3 on housing, 1/3 on living expenses, and 1/3 on savings.
I live above my means, in that I pay about 1/2 to rent. Then maybe I can do about 1/4 for living expenses, and 1/4 to savings. However, I have been out of work for almost a year, getting some unemployment, but it was not enough compared to what I was making. So I was probably paying almost 2/3 for my rent....
What little I had saved up (5k) helped cover any shortfalls from the unemployment, and I am now at about 1k in savings. I recently gotten some temp work, but my first 2 paychecks went to repairing my car--that I needed in order to work!

Check out the calculators and see what they recommend for you. Really try to cut back on the extra stuff, and keep in mind that you will be rewarded for your frugality in the future.

Work hard, get paid reasonably well, live well within your means and save. Find a company with a 401K plan and or a defined contribution pension plan. You're young so invest at least somewhat aggressively. Participate to the max. It will take time and you'll have to do reasonably well in your occupation, but you can get there. Good luck.

all you need is 2 million, it's not that bad. in fact its great that you're starting much earlier than what most people do! if you're interested, start looking into stocks or more conservative-bonds and mutual funds. you need to study them a bit, but with reading a few good books (even the dummies series) and studying some stock trends you can do excellent.

invest in an IRA or 401K

they both include investing in stocks/bonds etc. but they are well worth it for the future.

401K invests money directly from your paycheck and taxes are taken out after you take the money out, but I like the idea of roth IRA's better because you invest money into assets AFTER you pay taxes so when you go to take the money out of your IRA, you dont have to pay taxes on it!

keep in mind that these methods are for the conservative, there are many other ways to make money, creating a website, teaching people a skill, or even writing a book, do some research and find out how you can help ppl with what you like doing, you will get paid back somehow!

Cheers! to your future!

It will be impossible for you if you don't plan for it! Start now. That day will come.... sooner than you think.

Six to ten percent in a matching 401k should do it if you put in a large cap stock fund.

No, not impossible because you are thinking about it at the right time of your life. If you didn't start saving for retirement until you were in your 40s or 50s you'd be in trouble. But if you start saving now you should be okay.

If you start saving now and put only $50 per week (or $10/day for each work day) into retirement savings, assuming you are able to earn 8% interest on your retirement savings (a fairly conservative investing goal, over time), you will have more than $1 million saved by the time you turn 67 (your "full" retirement age). Compound interest works to your advantage when you start saving at a relatively young age.
