Is there a way I can ask credit card companies to lower my rate?
I have a great credit score but the cards I have are at too high of an interest rate. I'm workin on paying them off...a lower rate will obviously help with getting them paid a lot faster. Is there a way for me (to directly,) ask to have them lowered?

This is the strategy that I took. It allowed me to get a few percentage points decrease every few months while I was paying off old college credit card debt.

It was pretty easy to follow. I wrote this article several months back to document the process. Hope it helps out.

Sure just ask, and if they say no let them know that you're going to get a card with a lower intrest and transfer the balance.

Kristin
yes call them...it worked for me! good luck

Some of them will do it

Sure, just call and explain that given your payment history you deserve a better interest rate. If they are not interested, I guarantee other companies are. Shop around and you can save yourself a great deal of money.

pghmarty
Contact them and ask for a lower rate or you will transfer the balance to a card with a lower rate and close the account.

AG
Just give them a call. If your credit score is good, they'll most likely reduce the interest rate.

Yes!! I did this about a month ago and it worked for me. I called my company, that is a Visa credit card and I told them that I was going to switch. I said that I really liked having there card and I would not switch if they could give me better interest. (I decided to do this becasue I read it online) They lowered my rate to an introductory rate of 0% percent on a portion of the balance so I could pay things off faster! I has been a big help. I tried it with another of my credit cards and they said they could not change the rate so I switched.

I called & asked my CC company to lower my rate. They said no & I told them to go ahead & cancel my account-they lowered it to 9% on the spot.

If your credit is good, sometimes all you have to do is call the customer service number and ask.

Another option: You're probably receiving plenty of credit card deals in the mail offering low or zero interest on balance transfers from your other cards. Sometimes you can save a lot of money by taking advantage of these -- but read the fine print and make sure the low rate will be in effect long enough to make a difference.

Winky
yes, simply call and ask. this works best if you have an excellent payment history even if your balances are high.

YES there is. As stated above just call them and ask them. However to improve your odds here is a twist to the method. It worked for me when nothing else would.

Call customer service (most have an 800 or 888 number on the back or top of the statment) and ask some question or other of no real importance. During the conversation ask what city they are in. They could be any where in the world and you need to find out where and what time zone.

Call them back when its between 1:00 am and 3:00 am in their time zone. Most supervisors are gone, all of management is gone. Its the kids working part time to get through school maning the phones. Its the guys working in customer service part time to bring in a little extra money ( I used to work collections in the wee hours of the night for a cell phone company) These folks are not the every day pro's. Most of them don't care hoot in a hand bag about the company. They are just looking for tuition money. Now is your chance to get away with murder.

beg plead whine threaten to go to another company/bank. If you don't get any where all is not lost.

wait about a month. Call again with some trivial thing. The call will result in some sort of notation being added to your acct record. You don't want to have the person you ask to reduce your rate looking right at the last request to reduce your rate. The reason to wait a month is that most of these jobs have a high turn over. Waiting a month does not make you look over eager to get it changed, Waiting a month increases the odds that your going to get the "new guy". He will be in a hurry to make you happy and with just little pressure he will have a vastly increased risk of doing what you want.

So to review... call and ask a question, and get the name of the city they are working in. Call back in the wee hours of the morning in THEIR TIME ZONE. Ask for the change.

If you fail wait a month and call with a lame question. Call back in the wee hours and ask for the reduction again. By asking the lame question the day before, you will move any record of your last request down lower on the screen or off the screen all together. Most night shift crews are not going to look that far. Oh the war stories I could tell you about customer service workers who won't look very far into the notes on the account.

Repeat as needed every month...be shameless about it. You will eventually get some one who will just do it.

In the mean time shop around and see if you can find a different bank who wants your business more than your current bank.

on the same topic, I have discovered that asking for a discount from other merchants will increase my odds of getting a discount by at least 30%. So I ask frequently from every one, not just the bank. I have learned who will and who will not. Guess where I do the most business.
