Is there any way at all you can tell who banked a cheque you wrote?
because all it shows up on the statement is the cheque number and amount

Marky
yes, your bank will tell you but maybe for a small fee.

sam g
Your bank will definitely tell you.... but if you wrote the cheque... who did you make it out to ?? If the cheque was crossed A/C Payee Only, then only the named person on the cheque can bank it.

solitary
Ring the bank - I had to find this out one day and I am sure they told me who it was. Have a go and good luck!

Banks used to return people's cashed checks to them but that's very rare these days. Many banks however are starting to make images of cashed checks available on their web sites. Perhaps yours does.

The bank might be able to tell you, especially if you suspect some kind of fraud.

Once upon a time, my friend lost his checkbook and someone found it, wrote a check to cash, and forged his signature. But the idiot deposited it in his own bank account and was caught. I don't think my friend was told who it was, just that the money was returned to his account and the Bank was dealing with the police on prosecuting the person.

once you have wrote out a cheque and given it to someone in a lawful transaction and it as been cashed the banks are not allowed to tell you which account was used to cash the cheque this would be blatant abuse of the data protection act . however if a fraud or wrong doing is reported they are obliged to tell the police, and not you personally. if you dont believe me ask the bank for the information they will refuse to divulge.

Yes. Ask your bank: all cheques you write will be returned to your bank and they keep records. They may charge you to find out, though.

call your bank, the bank that gave you the check, and they will know

Shagger
Banks hold images of all cheques that have gone through the system.

You can request a copy of such a cheque from you branch or usual contact number. There will be a charge for this voucher request.

On this image you will see the stamp of the bank that cashed it etc... giving you the information you require.

If you suspect any form of cheque fraud though, you should inform your bank ASAP, so they can investigate it immediately.
