Is there any way to get out of a bank that keeps charging you over drafting fees? Or do I have to pay them?

Additional Details

Ummm why not try not over drawing your account. Thats what i do and it works wonderfully.

If you don't pay them, they can take you to court. I would go talk to the manager, explain what your situation is, and see if they will compromise with a smaller amount or atleast quit tacking more on (assuming you have a negative balance and they are charging a daily fee). In the meantime, quit bouncing checks. You can go to jail for that.

just quit writing bad checks!!!

de-activate the overdraft withdrawing system from your account...

the only way to "get out of it" is to not make the charges. That is something that is 100% in your control. The bank doesnt charge you just for the sake of it. It is because you took out more than what you had. Any bank that you go to will do the same. You could ask them to waive it. They might if you are not a repeat offender.

The only alternative, is to get approved for overdraft line of credit. That will prevent the fees from building up on you. You only pay a small amount of interest only if & when you use it.

Talk to your bank. The really aren't as evil as they seem. First ask yourself.. Why did you over draft? Accident, maybe they will forgive you.. Knowingly?? Then shame shame pay the fee..

My bank offers a "line of credit" overdraft protection, where I can write checks past what I have in my account, and they won't return them.. for a fee.

get out of the bank. of course you have to pay them.

You did the crime so now you have to pay for it.

Pay the fee and learn your lesson. Don't do anything to cause the bank to charge you again.

If you can't abide by the rules then find a bank or credit union with rules that you can follow and not incur charges.

Here's another alternative once you this account taken care of: try finding an account that has a zero overdraft fee. I haven't seen too many (as in none) in the traditional banking world without some kind of catch. Another option out there, though, is going with a good prepaid card. They give you a lot of good features that you need from a "bank" account, but with some differences. The one I have is a ReadyDebit card and it has no overdraft fees. I'll warn you though, the way they can do this is because they will decline transactions if it would result in your balance going negative (usually triggering an overdraft fee at other banks). If that sounds like what you want (and it does), then give it a look.

Also, there's a blog I've seen that had a good post on overdraft fees. I found it cause it mentioned the same card that I have. The blog is call quitwastingmoney.blogspot.com. Check it out.

Talk to management at your branch and explain the situation, they may also be able to give you ideas on how to prevent this from happening again, you will probably have to pay it but they may be willing to reverse a fee or two from your account, $100 seems a bit obscene, sure it was just one transaction that caused your overdraft or was it like 3 or 4 transactions that caused your account to go negitive and further negitive.
balance your checkbook, weekly, monthly, every time you do a transaction
you can also apply for a line of credit for your overdraft as it could help with any future fees potentially but most banks do charge an annual fee for this feature
you could set it up so that you don't have any overdraft protection on your account what so ever BUT anything done and accepted by the merchant using your debit card HAS to clear your account and it still could potentally overdraw your account still, and this does create a potential issue of checks or transactions that would normally clear would get kicked back depending on when they try to clear (rent, car payments, mortgage payments etc.)
i would ask yourself could any of your transactions have been spent using cash instead of your card? example: $3 latte at starbucks put on your atm card which overdraws your account get charge $30 in od charges so total cost was $33...was it worth $33? just withdraw like $200 in cash from an atm, it may overdraw your account but instead of 5+ charges or whatever you get one at a time if even and when running low on cash go withdraw a bunch again

$100 overdraft fee is outrageous.

They might forgive the first overdraft if your history shows that you have never done that sort of thing before or if there was some circumstance beyond your control that caused it, but if you consistently overdraw, then you have to pay up.

Good info is here:

Yes you should be able to go to your bank and tell them you want to opt out of the overdraft protection and they should give you a form to fill out and sign stating you dotn want this service. I read an article the other day on yahoo finance about how this is a underhanded practice to get more profit from banks and credit unions. If they wotn let you opt out which they almost have to if you dont want the service then change banks.
Read this linked article that I had read in Yahoo finance and it will explain alot.

Pay the fee.

Then start balancing your checkbook to avoid future fees. I had one overdraft when I was 16 or so and now I have really awesome credit - I learned my lesson!
