It's my money; should I be able to buy what I want with it?
I recently used a bit of my own hard-earned money to buy a pack of Hoodia Gordonii (if you don't know what that is, look it up) gum off of eBay; (i'm thin, but who doesn't want to lose a pound or 2 before school?) only after reading about it and how it is completely safe & natural. It arrived today, and my parents were instantly against it as soon as they asked me what was in the package and I innocently replied, "Diet gum." -- for lack of better words to describe the gum, which states something about how it isn't a diet-- (idk why the 'rents don't like diet products; my dad seems to think that they're all toxic.) My parents wouldn't listen when I tried to explain it, and I attempted to compile a list of facts about how the gum works and why it's safe, but they refused to view my efforts. Now, if I even try to mention how the gum is fine, and after all it was MY money i used to buy it, they get mad and say that I'm "pushing it". Pushing what, I don't know, but I do know that they never gave the gum, or me, a chance. It's not a big deal, but do you believe that my parents have a point and the gum is bad for some reason, or are they just being unreasonably narrow-minded?
Additional Details
Also, is there anything (reasonable) that i can say which would help convince my parents?
---Or should I drop the subject and send the gum back to its seller? (for a refund)

OK, when you say it's your money did you actually earn it and do you pay room and board? Because otherwise it's really their money you're wasting, and whether they're right or wrong, they're right.

Joyous
Sounds like you are not old enough. I have to side on your parents side on this one.

NO they were not being unreasonable or narrow minded. You are behaving like a child and being foolish. Trust your parents as hard as it may be to believe we really do know more than you.

Maybe they dont think its safe, as many diet products are not.

Sucks that your parents actually care about you, huh?

Hun, seriously pick up a book on SELF-ESTEEM. I read what you had to say, and NO your parents aren't being unreasonable. True beauty comes from within, work on your confidence.

In respond to your addition I think you should drop it, see if your parents can get a refund. I know you may not agree now but be happy you have caring parents, who want the best for you. Remember drop that 17 mag., for an article of self-esteem.

There is nothing bad about that, but it is all a sham. They just dont want you to waste your money on that crap. Every year there is some different fraud to lose weight. Now there are these acai berries too. Basically, the only way to lose weight is to eat less, and be active. It is that simple.

That said, they should let you waste your money as it is yours and everyone has to be ripped off a few times to learn.

animeluvforever
I understand it's your hard earn money, I think they are worried about you seeing how everything has something bad for you. even thought they claim it's safe there's always the possibility that it can have a side effect with your body. everyone is different. and seeing that your parents know that it's from the internet makes the situation even worse, 'cause they might think that it's from some other country, because every country has different laws about how to process stuff. so yeah you get the picture. parents hear things in the news and get concerned. I think the next time you buy something like that make sure you tell your parents you're buying it and show it to them.

I can't think of any reason to say to your parents to get them to give it to you. you might as well return it, unless someone else mentions something you can say and it works. I clicked it 'cause I recently had a problem like this

I'm sure you didn't spend a lot of money on this gum. Maybe you should have asked your parents if they thought that Hoodia gum was dangerous. By the way, I've looked for Hoodia in some health food stores and all I found is the leaves and stems and flowers. A complete waste of time. Only the roots curb your hunger. Send the gum back it's probably not going to do anything for you. You would be hard pressed to find a hoodia product that will work.

be_this_vibrant
Probably your parents are worried about what the gum might do, especially with all the hype about dangerous diet products. They also might be scared that you'll get addicted. Some products work by increasing metabolism, which is fine for some people and very bad for others.

Yes, it's your money, but parents do have a responsibility to watch what their kids are doing. A lot of people will say "as long as you're under 18" or "living under their roof", but it won't stop there. I'll bet if you bought diet gum in 10 years and told you parents they'd still get mad!

I don't think your parents are being ridiculous, but I don't think you are either. It is, after all, your money - and you felt like you were totally in the right. It would be different if you were felt guilty or were being totally sneaky.

Perhaps if you decide you don't want the gum, you can tell your parents you've decided not to try it (and give them some reason they might want to hear), and ask them to either allow you to refund it (and show them proof) or see if they will buy you something to offset the cost. Maybe you can get some new clothes out of it!

Its probably that they felt they didnt have a say in your decision, which, legaly, they are intitled to until you are 18. They want you to be safe, and though it is only gum, it is something they havent researched and dont know enough about to tell you its ok. Its just a parent thing, they have a a certain responsibility to your well being.
Hoodia is a supposedly safe dieting product, but can have adverse reactions if it is abused. and perhaps they feel your are thin enough. They just dont want to see you hurt.

just a man
Your parents want what's best for you.
Honor your father & your mother.

lol, you should do what you want with your money, but your parents are trying to make sure that your not selfconsious about your weight(idk what yours is ) self conscience --> disorders --> antidepressants --> suicide in THEIR minds, lawlz

theyre just worried about you, thats all. i mean, not everything diet is safe. and if its something you eat that miraculously sucks the fat out of you, i dunno..i dont blame them for worrying. theyre just being parents, thats all. the best way to lose weight is to exercise. you never know about this gum, it might have nasty side effects.

If I were a parent, I too would be unhappy if my teenage daughter was chewing diet gum instead of finding a healthier alternative to loose a few pounds. They're only looking out for your health. Maybe this gum is natural, but it's still something that they know nothing about. It's something that's foreign to them so just consider that every time you bring it up. Or, just don't bring it up! And chew it when you're with your friends instead. At least they didn't take it away from you. It's your money, but you're still living under their roof. And if you're a minor, then they can still control you because you're not an adult.

this is coming froma 29 year old guy.

OHH BOY, that's kind of a tough one! I'd say your parents actually do have a right to be concerned,

1. there are a lot of diet products that are pretty bad for you.

2. i know you feel it is none of their business, and you might be right, however, i don't know how old you are but your safety is thier responsibility.

I know how it is, my parents are the same, particularly my mom.

Perhaps your parents don't believe that the Hoodia you purchased for about $20 + does actually contain Hoodia. Way too many folks have been fooled by snake-oil salesmen(women).
I just read this at Hoodia Review :
Don't be short changed with Hoodia products less than 2400mg daily dose and an extra large 90 count bottle . Like all supplements, sufficient quantities of the active ingredient are needed. Do not be fooled by companies displaying Alchemists Reports that DO NOT include a USDA Protected Plant permit and Phytosanitary permit! Finally, only a HPLTC Lab Test (look for Advance Labs, a true independent lab) will confirm the authenticity of the Hoodia in the product.
I know that your item is a gum, but the ingredients are important. Perhaps you can read the ingredients list and see what the amount of Hoodia is versus the amount of fillers. I hope you received your $20 worth of Hoodia, and that it will work for you. Otherwise you may like to join a health club, it's a very healthy way of loosing weight, and making friends as well:-)

i think you should be able to buy what you want
but considering youre still in school
your parents probably just want you to buy sensibly
you know how parents are ;)

i think i would just remind them that it is your money
and if they feel you're making a mistake somehow
its always better to learn it on your own the hard way,
otherwise you'll just make the same mistake later in life

but my parents are pretty easy going
so i dont know if that will work for your parents
