hello, i had a joint account with my gf, and i took all the money out of the account for personal reasons without letting her know (not purposly), can she do anything to get me in trouble? some of the funds in the account were her's...if it is a joint account, what happens in a case like this? can she do anything about it? |

I work for a bank and no there is nothing legally she can do. If it is a joint account you both have access to what ever may be in there...now what she may do to you is another question. |

You both had equal rights of ownership with that account.
Adding a joing owner is a silly way of solving a problem IMHO. |

if you were joint tenants on the account, and not tenants in common, then there is nothing she can do. you were both equally responsible for the funds, you both had equal signing authority on the account. i think you were somewhat rude to not tell her, but rest assured, she has no legal ground whatsoever. |

legally no -- but really ask yourself do you even really care about her to have done something like that? obviously your personal reasons sound sneaky or you would have discussed this with her -- if you chose to have a joint account i would assume this was to be a situation where joint decisions were made.
if you have any standards tell her if you haven't and if she knows make a way to pay her back and really examine your relationship because that sucks! |

If she can prove that at least part of the money was hers, she can sue you. If she had any checks written out there that had not cleared the bank when you removed all the money, she is looking at some legal charges if they hit the bank before the money gets into the account. Who ever she has written checks to can charge her with writing bad checks and that is a charge that can follow you for a very long time. |

Good question.. I would hope you plan to pay the money back. Or at least used the money for something useful. But since it is a joint bank account, i highly doubt it. |

There is nothing she can do, and she deserves it for being stupid enough to have one, she will just have to suck it up as a lesson learned. How do you take all of the money out for personal reasons, not letting her know, and say that it wasn't on purpose? That was done very purposely, you obviously knew she wasn't just going to let you take it, if you had asked nicely. |

Yes - anyone can sue anyone --- for not only the problem but damages ---- that costs you alot more.
Basically, you should do the right thing and return her share of the money --- she has rights and you have abused them. You could end up in really hot water if she has a mind to sue you. Financially for a very long time. She could also ruin any credit rating you have or hope to have in the future.
Law is about intent - the intent of the account was joint not singular. Stealing is stealing --- by putting this in print you have admitted guilt. Clean the slate - give back what you owe to protect yourself or to protect your soul. |
