The company you originally borrowed from will have sold old debts to a recovery company who are trying to recoup what they can.
If it was from 1995 ingore it, even the Inland Revenue can only recoup old debts from upto 7 years ago.
Do not reply to the letter or you will reactivate the debt.

They can _attempt_ to recover the debt. Do not reply in any manner, do not make any payments, or even acknowledge the letter until you talk with an attorney.
You may not be liable for this old, bad debt.

That bill is way past the statue of limitations for them to even try and collect... What ever you do, don't pay them any money at all or else the debt will be re-instated. I would seal the letter back up and scratch off your address and draw an arrow back to their address and write on the envelope.."wrong person..wrong address" and place in public mailbox and it will go back to them. At that point, they won't try again.. I know because I use to work for a collection agency and we would send tons of letters out and see if we got any action or money from them...Lay low and don't do anything else except returning it as no such person.. You will probably never hear from them again.

They certainly can "attempt" to recover the debt. Whether you will pay or not is up to you. Legally, you probably can avoid it. Seems like it will be up to you to pay or not. Don't know if they can affect your credit at this point.

Trying to scare you. If you haven't had any correspondance from them in 6 years or longer then the debt is written off and they cannot chase you for it.
It wasn't a company called McKenzie Hall by any chance was it?

Polo
If they haven't been in touch for over 6 years, I don't think they can....

Andrew C
not a chance with that age. they're trying it on.

If you owe someone money, then it should be paid.
What would happen if the shoe was on the other foot ?

It all depends on who it is from. But chances are yes, you do still owe it. It would have to be written in the contract of the debt that the debt becomes void over time. You could probably contact the debtor and ask to make payments or get them to give you some more time to produce the money. Bottom line is to keep track of your debt. Sorry :(

chalkeypenny
If I were you I'd arrange a payment plan with the debt buyer, usually when a debt is bought by a debt company they expect not to get it back from the client(ie you) BUT if you don't pay them back this will reflect on your national credit file and can stop you getting things like new credit cards, mobile phones and more seriously a mortgage! DCA's (debt recovery agencies) are notorious for stopping people getting on with their lives years down the line. Set up a Payment Arrangment for whatever you can afford each month but remember the longer it takes you to pay off the longer your credit file is affected.

ERIC S
Sorry Steve: but how can you forget a debt of £600 , and why did you not pay it then to avoid situations like this. Either way it looks like you owe the money, so pay up and be a man, not look for ways out of it. If it's not correct then fight it to the finish. There's the other thought you could end up paying Court Charges ?
