Just inherted 600,000 USD, what do I do now ?
I have inherited 600,000 USD. I have the opportunity to put them in a secure 5 year term account at 5.75%. What would you do ? Invest in Bonds . Stocks or the secure account ? (If I deposit less than 600,000 then the rates will be less examples 500,000 is at 5%)

No bonds, U.S. savings bonds take 18 years to mature and only earn less than 3% (I think). No stocks, unless it's something like Microsoft, Coca Cola or Walmart, and then I would only invest about 10-20%.

If you don't want the stocks and have other income, lock it all in at the 5.75% rate. In the next 5 years the rate may go slightly higher, that's a risk you take, but it could also go a lot lower and you'll be glad you locked at this rate. Also, be sure the full amount will be FDIC insured. I think most banks and credit unions cap at 200,000 or 250,000, so you may want to talk to a financial advisor about that. We had to put a max amount in a joint acount, then split the rest between 2 individual accounts so that it would all be safe, but without it, if your bank goes poof, so does your money.

Congratulations!

Go for the secure bonds. You won't get a better rate in the next five years. Stay away from stocks.

If you can lock it in at 5.75% for the next 5 years, do it. You will have just shy of 800,000 at the end of those 5 years. At that same rate you'll be just over 1m at the end of 10 years.

In the mean time, educate yourself, and pay attention to what's going on in the market.

Continue to do your thing, stay in school or keep your job, whatever, but leave this money alone until you have a clear idea about what you want to do with it.

the stock market is almost as low as it wil go - I would put 100,000 in each of 3 different mutual funds - maybe look for one that have a lot of stocks that pay dividends, one with a lot of international stocks and one ETF type fund.

if you have have kids, put a lot into their college funds - maybe in a 529 plan-tax free when you withdraw for school expenses

100k in those cd's -

pay off all debt - maybe buy a small house with cash or large down pamt
investment property - with immediate positive cash flow

I would split it some way between the bonds and savings account. Maybe 75% bonds and 25% savings. I would stay away from stocks for another year.

Be smart with it. I would not recommend putting a large sum of the money into stocks, as you can see if you turn on your TV, the stock market and economy has gone mad.

Save it in a bank, and get a nice littlei interest rate.

And, if you haven't heard it enough, congratulations.. And sorry if you inherited from someone passing, that's never easy!

It's a hefty sum that you're unlikely to see again in your life. I'd consider sticking it in a SAFE, NO risk environment. (Boring but safe).

5.75% is 34,500! If that's yearly % you're quoting, that ain't a bad little income to supplement what you already earn, AND at the end of the day, you still have your 600K.

IF you wanted to take a calculated risk (long term one) consider property. It's a buyers market right now and you could buy a LOT of real estate for that money. Rental income, on the correct properties, could exceed the 5.75% (In UK they try to get 7%+ ROI). On top of that your property should increase in value too, so you gain 2 ways. Property though IS a longer term investment (especially at the moment).

My final suggestion is to deposit the whole lot into MY bank account. The number is ... ;).

Congratulations on your windfall. Whatever you do, don't take great risks, and DO get professional advice.

Jeff
Spend it all.

The economy needs you.

I'd give some to charity, invest some....and with the rest go live life. That's a lot of money to have in one hit.
