The only reason to keep paycheck stubs, is to verify that the information on your W2 form at the end of the year is correct.
I never keep more than the previous 2 months.
I'm sure you are referring to the STUBS and not the checks. You should be cashing the CHECKS. |

Yes it is necessary to keep, and yes you can scan them and shred the originals.

hello,
i wouldn't scan them, as far as viruses are concerned. it is a good idea to keep them, but if you don't want to keep them all, at least keep the last paycheck you receive from each job at the end of the year. or say you work at a job and quit in july. keep that last paycheck. this is good for taxes and audits. |

Do you mean paystubs? because you should cash your check |

Scanning is fine. As far as I can tell, the only use for paychecks would be for applying for renting a home, or applying for some sort of loan, in which case scans of old pay stubs are fine and then only the most recent pay stubs are actually important. |

i used to save mine for a year or 6 mths, then throw them out and start new.. |

always an opinion

Keep them until you get your year-end tax statement. Verify that the information is all correct (earnings, with holdings...) then shred your originals. If you feel a need to keep each pay stub, there is no reason you can't scan them. |

oh yes, very necessary. I've kept all of mine just in case. It also helps for taxes if you happen to have lost your W2. I've kept mine because they helped me get on medicare and they also helped me get financial assistance when I was injured in an accident. It just proves what you make on a regular basis |

I don't keep mine. My tax preparer told me there was no use in it.
I might keep the last 4 weeks stored but that is it. |

That's not a good idea. The IRS could come knocking and wanna do an audit. And given the failure rate of HDD's, ehhh.
I wouldn't do it, that's all I'm saying. |

I WILL SUJEST YOU NOT ONLY KEEP YOUR PAY CHECKS BUT KEEP YOUR INCOME TAX RECORD FOR AT LEAST THREE YEARS.ALL THE ORIGNALS.BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW IF YOU WERE AUDITED EVEN WITH OUT YOUR FAULT AND DO NOT KEEP EVERY DOCUMENTS NEEDED,IT WILL BE VERY HARD TO PROOVE THAT IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT.ONCE IT HAPPENED TO ME AS I WAS LAID OFF AND NEXT WEEK WENT TO COLLECT UNEMPLOYMENT AND I GOT BY WEEKLY CHECK,FOR SOME REASON I DID NOT CASH THAT CHECK AND THEN GOT MY SECOND CHECK,I DID NOT CASH THAT,AND AFTER A MONTH MY COMPANY REHIRED ME BACK WITH ALL THE BACK DATED PAY FOR THE WHOLE MONTH.SO I WENT TO THE UNEMLOYMENT OFFICE AND RETURN THE ORIGNAL CHECKS KEEPING THE COPIES OF BOTH THE CHECK AND THE RECEIPT OF THE INFORMATION THEY GAVE,THE LADY TOLD ME THAT YOU DO NOT NEED THE COPY OF THE CHECK BECAUSE YOU HAVE RETEURN THE ORIGNALS,WELL MY SIX SENSE TOLD ME I AM RIGHT.SO NEXT YEAR I WAS AUDITED FOR NOT PAYING BACK THE UNEMPLOYMENT CHECK AND THE GUY WHO DID MY RETURN BY MISTAKE PUT THE WRON FIG AS INTEAD OF THE HOME LOAN INTEREST $4600/- HE ADDED $6400/- IN SHORT BEFORE DOING ANY THING I PAID THE PENELTY OF THE DIFFERENCE OF ABOVE AMOUT AND TOLD THEM IT WAS INNOCENT MISTAKE AND I DO NOT NOTICE WHEN I SINGED THE PRETURN PAPER WHICH I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FILE,AND THE OTHER THING ABOUT THE TWO CHECKS I RETURN THE ORIGNAL WITHOUT CASHING THEM,AND SEND THE PROOF BEFORE SENDING THE DOCUMENTS I WENT TO THE UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE AND SHOWED,THE AUDIT REPORT THE LADY WAS VERY SORRY TO SEE THAT HAPPENED TO ME AND SHE ADMITTED THAT WAS A COMPUTER MISTAKE THAT SOME HOW THE RETURN CHECKS WERE NOT IN PUT OR ACCEPTED IN THE SYSTEM.SO AFTER SIX MONTH I GOT MY CHECK FOR THE PANELTY ON MY UNEMPLOYMENT USED AND DO NOT PAY THE TAX.
SO I WANT TO LET EVERY ONE KNOW SOME TIMES KEEPING THESE RECORDS COME VERY HANDY.YOU CAN SHERED THEM ANY TIME BUT KEEPING THEM FOR LONG TIME WILL NOT HARM YOU.
GOOD LUCK |

By paychecks, I'm assuming you mean paystubs? And it is a very good idea to keep them. A few years ago, I had to take my past employer to small claims court because her business was going under and she was trying to withhold paychecks from several of my co-workers and myself. I had to recreate my schedule and show past pay stubs for an hourly trend and pay rate. Needless to say, she was forced to pay, but without the pay stubs I doubt I would have been able to prove anything. |

You don't need all of them. Keep current with the last month's worth. Usually you'll only need them to apply for financial aid, need-based exemptions and such. I wouldn't even waste too much comp. space on 'em. |

If you want to get a loan you will need at least your last two pay stubs. I don't think it's necessary to keep them longer than that. |

It can come in handy - you never know. For example: when I wanted to defer my fed student loan payment, I had to supply a copy of my most recent pay stub. |
