littlemissunshine | Living on a $31,500/yr salary? |
I'm a recent college graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Studies. I graduated from Penn State and was employed immediately. I'm really passionate about my job but the human service field doesn't pay much. I plan on pursuing my master's within the next two years but until then, I'll make $31,500/yr. (Working 35 hrs/week.)
- I live in Philadelphia, PA.
- I have a roommate to split rent. (I pay $500/month)
- Electrity/Cable ($100/month)
- Soon will have student loans ($100/month)
- Gas Money
- Other Expenses (groceries, clothes, etc.)
I was considering looking for a part time job but since I'm just starting out, I don't want to be overwhelmed quite yet. Can I afford to support myself on this salary? |

Yes, you can support yourself. It will be tough, but you can do it. Don't be disheartened. Our country needs educated people like you who have devoted themselves to helping others. I hear so many students talk about how much money they can make with this major or that major. |

It is called budgeting. You probably bring home around $2K per month. Your expenses, even estimating high, are around $1500 per month. I know single mothers that live on $8 per hour. You have to decide your priorities, budget what you have and go for what you want. |

You should be able to live on that salary.
Since I don't know your gas expenditures or how much you usually spend on other expenses, I can't tell you for sure.
You would have to be frugal, but it can be done. |

If you are going for your Master's degree, you can defer your undergrad student loan until you finish. |

Look up the self sufficiency line for the area. That will tell you how much it takes to survive without living in poverty. It is adjusted by county, so it is fairly accurate for each area. My guess is that you are fine. 31K/yr isn't alot, but I live a very expensive area (Resort town in Colorado) and the line here is 28K/yr.
If an employer won't pay you enough money to stay ubove the self sufficiency line in the area, then you don't want to work for them. They don't value their employees well being which you will see in many more ways once you work for them. (Poor treatment, lousy benifits, unsafe or lousy work enviornment etc...)
Don't forget the rest of the bills. Health and auto insurance, Food, Clothes, recreation, gym membership, internet, cell phone, etc... |

You can definitely get by on that salary. My husband makes about that and supports myself and our daughter while I go to school, so I really think you will probably scrape by (our rent is the exact same, too), and in fact can live quite comfortably if you are careful. Please don't get a second job- they're a vicious cycle. |

That will be about $440.00 take home per week after taxes (27%). You can make it on that if you don't go wild buying clothes and stuff. |

I think you'll be fine, but you don't want to rely on a roomate, because if they leave, you'll be SOL |

I live on the other side of the state from you (Pittsburgh), and have similar living expenses. I'm a little further along in my career, but I lived comfortably on much less.
If you're not sure how to begin check out some sites about budgeting (Motley Fool is a good source), or living a more frugal lifestyle. Just paying attention to grocery sales, and buying generic brands cut my grocery bill in half. Budgeting, and more importantly sticking to your budget, is key too. Cutting out things you simply don't need like expensive clothes, consumer electronics, or eating out a lot saves you more money than may you realize. Personally, I love sites like mint (http://www.mint.com) too. It's free, helps track your spending, and even keep budgets for you. |

That sounds quite doable. I would make a budget to control those nice to do expenses that plague all of us. That way that new blouse you would look so great in can be measured also on the effect it will have on your monthly budget before you buy it not after. I would also include some emergency funds in that budget for that car repair or doctors visit. It is easier to adjust to a low budget while you are starting out than to pare down a higher budget later. |

I make less than that. My rent is $600, truck payment is $343, student loan is $100 etc. I manage but it's tight. Im sure you will be fine. |

I would advise you to start a consulting business and then you could write off a fair portion of your housing costs (and gas expenses to go to and from work if you have any sort of stops to make for supplies for your business) in addition to the benefits of splitting the rent and other costs with your roommate.
I don't see why you can't make it on that salary alone. |
