Living on a tight budget?
Me and my husband just got married and moved and now he doesnt really have a job and mine doesnt start until January. Neither of us went to college but I still have student loans from the one year I went. We also purchased a new car not too long ago and have that to pay, not to mention rent, electric, heat, gas and water. We are thinking about going down and applying for food stamps because when our pantry food runs out we arent sure what else to do. Is there any advice, websites, recipes, anything that could help us get thru this right now until better times come? I'm trying to work on a budget but I would like to see some examples of some others first. Any help and advice you can give is appreciated. Thanks
Additional Details
btw, neither of us smoke or drink or use money for foolish stuff like that. also he has been trying to get a job but everyone says he doesnt have enough experience to get a good job even though he has a very good resume. its only been a few years since we've been in highschool so how much experience can you possibly have? He worked one job all thru high school and you'd think that would look good. : p

First of all, most student loans will offer an economic hardship forebearance, so apply for that right away to save your credit...

Secondly, apply for the food stamps...that's not a bad thing to do. IT's intended to help good people who are trying to better themselves.

Thirdly, it really doesn't matter what kind of job your husband has when he is unemployed, so going to apply for ANY job (McDonald's, delivering pizza, stocking store shelves, etc.) is a good idea to get a positive flow of money. He can do this until he can find a good job with a decent salary and benefits.

Fourth; don't worry about paying bills that aren't important for your well being. You need to make sure you have food, shelter, clothing, etc. So make sure you always pay for living expenses first!

Fifth, look for cost saving measures. Get yourself on a cheap meal plan and budget your groceries to make sure you know exactly how much you have for food each week or so. Also, buy cheap and generic. All food tastes the same anyways when you're trying to surivive. Buy your clothes and second hand shops...you really can get decent clothes for great prices. I bought a suit once for $10 abd nailed a decent job just from that suit...

Sixth, encourage one another and don't give up!

First things first. Your husband HAS to get a job. Even if it's not a "good" job. Any job is better than no job. You can always get hired for fast food, retail, etc. Everyone has to start somewhere. It's hard at first - but this is how you start "working your way up". If he works hard and has a good attitude, he'll get promoted quickly. But more important, he'll get the experience he needs.

Conserve where you can. If you haven't done these things already: Cancel the cable & internet service. Cancel one of your cell phones. Keep the house a little colder and wear your jackets inside. Don't eat out. Don't buy Starbucks.

And please use birth control (Planned Parenthood is good for this). The last thing you need right now is a baby. Get your lives in order first and then start saving for that. :-)

Good luck. You can do it!

I'm currently engaged to be married in 2008, my fiancé and I are saving every cent we can to put a down payment on a home and buy furniture. In this saving process I've learned a few things:

1. Don't buy any food that's already been prepared... it's more expensive and unnecessary. Carrots that have already been chopped are going to cost you a lot more than ones straight from the ground. You can do the peeling and chopping yourself.

2. This one sounds a bit silly but my fiancé and I have started picking up any change we find in parking lots and stores. All those pennies add up. Trust me!

3. Always be conscious of gas money. If you live in an apartment don't drive to the mail box, walk. Don't go to your Mom's just to hang out... Gas is too expensive these days, Mom wont mind coming to you.

4. Rice and Beans are really quite good if you learn how to cook them. One of our favorite things to make is Mexican rice with Charro beans. It's the cheapest thing in the world and also makes really good leftovers.

5. We love to fish. We are fortunate enough to live on the coast of Texas where we can throw a cast net and catch our own bait (for free) then with any luck have a free delicious dinner.

I hope some of this helps you. Y'all are going to get out of this situation... I promise.

You have gotten some really good advice, I especially liked Little Man. He nailed it! I would encourage you to try to get a job as a waitress, server, whatever they call it. That will provide immediate cash - Not a lot but more than you have now. Your husband needs to get some sort of job now. As you have already been told something to generate income be it fast food or convenience stores, delivery something. Your income will help you get through til he gets a check. You may be able to continue serving until you get your check at the job that will start in January.
Follow the budget suggestions you have received and as soon as you possibly can start saving for emergency situations. You never know what life holds for you and be as prepared as you can.
I also liked the caution about preventing pregnancy, you don't want your child to have to do without.

For the time being it wouldn't kill him to work somewhere he knows he can make a paycheck. Wal-mart, drugstore, just something to hold you over until he finds a good job. He needs to continue to send his resume out, sometimes calling people directly on the phone will get you an interview. Be persistant. As far as your budget: pay your mortgage/rent first, then utilities, then groceries...anything after that cut out if you can't afford it. Remember this is just temporary until something more stable comes along. You should get a job yourself (if you don't already have one) especially if you don't start until late in January. Eat lots of ramen noodles! Mac & cheese is a staple..just keep loving & supporting each other. So many people get divorced over money and it's sad. Good luck! Let me know how it turns out!

Sounds tough. When you finally dig out of this hole and I have confidence that you will, promise yourself that you'll go Suze Orman and have an emergency fund for times like this.

Ramen noodles.
Spaghetti.

Lots of it.

I can't feel sorry for you because you are in this situation because you apparently didn't think ahead. You bought a new car, no jobs, etc, etc.

Lucy
food stamps is the best idea right now

Everyone gave pretty good advice. Remember that most libraries have free internet service! Also, hit up the department of labor and have your husband apply for unemployment (which I did when I got out of the military, but because of my skills, they helped me find a job within 3 weeks!!), but the unemployment office will also assist him with job placement. ALWAYS keep your eyes open for new jobs. Also, to save utilities, shower together (fun!), unplug electronics that aren't used 24/7, use lots of blankets and keep your thermastat at warm temp (again, another reason to snuggle w/ your honey). Just keep the faith sweetie... I've been there and both me and my husband are doing very well for ourselves. Just remember to pay your bills (even if it's just part of it...call the utility companies to make arrangements if you have to because if you don't pay, it WILL effect your credit and hurt you guys in the long run). As far as your vehicle, make sure to frequently check the air (low tires will effect ur gas milage).
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!

Get a job waiting tables. You get instant cash from tips and that will help you get over the rough spot. It is always a good job to keep while looking for another (real) job during the day.

You guys can give blood. That will get you a little money.
