Living on my own....?
I'm about to turn 18. I've always been an independent individual, and am preparing to move out of my house. I intend on living at home until the end of the school year, and then moving out. I'm trying to save money, and come up with a financial plan to be sure I'm prepared for this move. Do you know any websites where I can find average of cost of electric bills, water bills....etc. And any websites where I can get advice about living on my own? Or do you have any tips?

One thing i did when i was preparing to move out was for my next birthdays/xmas just ask for thing like blender, dish and other housing stuff that i would be needing for when i moved out i saved me from buying then ppl know you are looking for stuff too and staring giving you old TV ect.

I dont know what your home life is like but IF you can stay at home as long as posible it will be the best way to save $$$. But i am sure you have your reasons. good luck!

Best thing you can do is find an apartment with the same amount or less you make a week. Ex: If you make 400 a week find an apartment that cost that much. It may not be the best of apartments but it will help you from going into debt. Some apartments include utilities, they would be the best choice, even if its a hundred more than you make a week, it includes the bills you would pay otherwise. When you go to look at an apartment, ask the landlord what the average utilities bill is for an apartment. If you have to pay your own heat, a smaller apartment will help with that cost, also if is above another one, because you will get some of the heat from the apartment below you. Living on your own you will realize how much everything cost, things you took for granted at home, tissues, paper towels, cheese, milk, etc. You will learn to conserve. The price of things will vary, depending on the area. Some apartments can be double, only a mile away because it has better area. My sister pays the same price for a half a house in one city, compared with my other who has a little 0ne room.

First things first, you need to make sure you can afford it. Depending on where you live...if you get an apartment if average cost of a one bedroom one bath can be anywhere from 600 - 1500 a month. Are you planning on going to school? Will you parents be helping at all? Do you have a car payment? These are all things you need to think of. Here is what my budget looked like when I lived by myself in Dallas Tx after college. This is monthly...yours will vary.

Rent - 1200
Car - 250
Car Insurace 120
Electric 150
Phone 65
Water 20
Cable/Internet 116

*this does not include gas, food, entertainment, health insurance, savings, and all the other random things that pop up in life. I acctually saved money on my rent by taking an apt that was on the third floor. You should always ask! Hope this helps some.

you can try this one if you live in the states: http://swz.salary.com/costoflivingwizard/layoutscripts/coll_start.asp

I've been living on my own since I was 18 because after highschool I did some travelling, and I've been at university for a couple of years too. The most expensive things when you move out are the start-up fees with setting up a phone line, internet, all that stuff, and then furniture and food gets pretty costly too. What I would recommend is instead of renting an entire appartment or whatever by yourself that you rent a room in a shared accomodation. If you go on university web sites they often have off-campus listings. Sometimes you can get an already-furnished room that comes with it's own bathroom and bills are included. As far as food goes, buy non-parishable items in bulk (rice, cans of soup, pasta) because it's cheaper and they last longer. I usually make a batch of curry or spaghetti sauce and freeze individual portions of it, lasts ages. Buy meat in bulk too, it might look more expensive at first but you do save money over time. Just make sure you freeze portions in individual baggies or containers.
Good luck!

If you do move, stop and think head all the time....No JOKE. Electric bill $200-250/Deposit $400, Water $50-100/Deposit $75-150, If gas for heat $75-200/Depot $125-250. That is based on where I live, and that is in the back woods small town, in Northeast Texas. Different towns can be higher. As for a phone stay with a cell phone right now. As for your money, pay your bills each week, and then divide the rest of your money into 3. Take 2/3 of it in the bank and try not to spend the 2/3rd for anything. Food is counted in on bills. Your home, car, electric, water, gas bills or your top things.

Get this straight..you can not live on your own with the paltry savings you may have and go to school unless you want to live in a tree house in the back yard. Be a realist. Americans owe 2.5 Trillion on credit card debt. Finish this year, at least, at school living at home. Watch Glen Beck on Headline News to see the state of the Gov., business and citizens. By the spring you may be able to see how rough it's going to be Worldwide. You may be an independent individual but smart people than you are getting hurt. Be wise and good luck with your life, may it be long.

I don't know any websites but...
Be prepared for the unexpected! The first month is going to be soooo expensive because you won't have certain things in you house or apartment and because you are so used to having them at home you just won't think about how much they actually cost when bying them all at once for example...shower curtains, soap, a dish drying thing, pots and pans, a sofa, can opener, rubbing alcohol, bandages,...the list goes on. I remember spending around 600 dollars on the little things around my 1st apartment the first month! Food is also not cheap so buy only what you need...this is also expensive the first month.
Also please keep your rent reciepts.! Let me tell you...the apartments were I lived at...they stole the deposit money and then came to me for more money because they said they lost it and we didn't pay it so they took us to court even though we did pay it! Then when their argument didn't make sense, they tried charging us late fees and stuff so they will try to scam you out of your money so always keep those reciepts organized and ready to take them to argue with that rental office! Also when the lease is over you have to notify the rental people a month in advance that you are moving out or else they will charge you an extra months rent! Yes even if the lease is over.
I would say have at least 10,000 saved before you move out! Moving out is no joke. Im back at my mami's house now and im loving it!!!
Also if you have a car...make sure you take care of it because gas will eat your wallet up too! I spent 40 dollars a week on gas while living on my own!
So save save save and the only way to get out of poverty is to go to school! Finish your masters yes masters degree before you move out! Going to school and work at the same time is really hard when you have rent due the next day.
Best friends are never good roomates btw!

I believe that this is one of those things that you will have to experience most of your questions on your own. However, you can utilize peoples experiences and learn from them. I wish there were more young people like you that sought out help before going out on thier own, you're off to the right start. As far as average costs of living etc, you should be able to (use a seach engine) and type in your city and a demographic of your area should come up (www.city-data.com). I would start interviewing apartments you are interested in living at, and then put together a budget. Ask them how much tenant's average electric bill is. Most companies will know that information, and most will know the water usage/average bill since most of them either include it in the rent or you have to pay extra for it through thier office. The other luxuries such as cable and phone, you can just call your local companies and let them know you're interested in thier services and would like an estimate for what you need. You will have to do some homework on your own to find some of these answers as most utilities companies operate differently and have different tax percentages. I would say in order to know if you're ready to be on your own, I would have in a savings account at least 6-8 months worth of your monthly bills. That means all of your expenses. Groceries, rent, utilities, cc bills, anything else really that you need on a monthly basis. Good luck to you.
