There are lots of ways to save money and while saving pennies here and there is wise and practical, don't skimp on the energy to save dollars in leiu of finding pennies and when you do find pennies, put them in a savings account. It does no good to save money and then just go out and spend the found money on wasted wants. You'll find some awesome money saving tips in books and magazines from your local library. Consider starting a group of neighbors, family, or friends to have discussion groups about money saving tips. Make sure to use coupons only on things you need... don't buy things just because you have a coupon. Don't be afraid of generic products. Don't be afraid to ask sellers for discounts on items or be afraid to walk if they refuse. Don't get into the credit card trap and if you do use credit cards, make sure to get low interest rates and pay on time in full if you can. Review your credit reports for errors. Don't get sucked into all the cable channels or elaborate cell phone plans. Get as many tax free shelters as you can: 401K, flexible spending, part time business, etc. Hire or network with professionals like tax advisors. They are worth their fees if you use them correctly. Read as much as you can about anything and everything. Keep up on preventative maintenance on your home, car, computer, etc. Shop around when you purchase items. Don't go overboard with gift giving... give from the heart, not the wallet. Run your home like a business. Recycle to your advantage. You don't have to buy everything new. Walk when you can. Quit or cut down on smoking. Rent videos with friends to share the costs. Don't collect things that don't increase in value. Use value when shopping for things. If you are not getting your money's worth from something, look for something else. A $12,000 Hyundai will get you from Point A to Point B as easily as a $40,000 Lexus. Make your own sense of image by having money in the bank. Give up on faraway travel as exciting as the journeys might be. There are plenty of amazing things to do right in your backyard. Go to your local zoo instead of planning to go on an African safari. Try new restaurants in your own community. Don't gamble. Make your own coffee instead of going to shops that have branding and image. Walmart has clothing... you don't have to go to Macys or Sax. Stop making businesses rich!!! Treat yourself as a business and make yourself rich.

never switch on lights, night vision glasses can be purchased quite cheaply at any military hardware store.

Obviously the ways already suggested are good - for the big bills, like light and heat.

But for day to day spending i think its a good idea to write down what you buy each day and see if you can cut down. For example, if you buy a newspaper then don't - read the news online. Don't buy drinks out, they cost a fortune. Once you have started writing it down you may be amazed at how much you spend on little things.

Set yourself a budget and don't go over it.

turn your heating themostat down by at least 1 degree

wash clothes in 30 degrees not 40 or higher

get energy saving light bulbs

line your curtains with black out curtains - keeps heat in and warms up rooms

have showers instead of baths

old soap slithers - save and mould together to form a new bar of soap

use washing up water to water plants

You know people think I’m a bum because over the last 16 years I’ve maybe purchased a total of 3 presents for my 4 nephews, I’m talking a grand total 3 or 4. I don’t give anyone a Christmas present, no Birthday presents, no Halloween candy, no Hallmark cards for anything. I’ve just watched too many friends with out enough money cough up dollar after dollar on these types of activities, and yet don’t have enough to put in savings. The other thing I notice is what is in people grocery carts, all of those prepared foods are expensive! Make a big batch of spaghetti sauce or a couple pans of lasagna and freeze portions, it tastes better then all that junk at the store anyways! Get a loaf of bread and some deli meat, mustard, lettuce what have you for your lunch. It’s so much cheaper then a trip through Taco Johns, and you’ll add a couple of years to your life.

Always cook at home. Don't go dining out a lot.

Haggle each time you have to make a purchase.
Buy bulk, the larger in weight the cheaper per kilogram, i.e., wholesalers have different prices to retailers
Eat what you cook, so homemade sandwiches for work and home cooking using basic unprocessed ingredients, again purchasing bulk, wholesale vegetables fruit from fruit veg wholesale markets
Daylight is better than electricity
Rethink the cost of smoking(if any)
Newspapers (once a week better than 7 per week)
TV switch no standby
reuse plastic bags, don't overload your fridge, this uses more electricity

If you read a lot of my answers you see that I recommend The Motley Fool Website www.fool.co.uk. One of their authors has this thing he calls Extreme Budgeting where he try's to spend as little money as possible -(http://www.fool.co.uk/news/comment/2005/c050111e.htm)

Check that you major bills are a cheap as possible i.e. mortgage, utilities, mobile phone, broadband etc try www.uswitch.com

Make shopping lists before going to the supermarket and stick to it!

See if you're claiming all the benefits you’re entitle to (only really applies if you have kids or are retired!)

You can cut your fabric softner sheets in half, use your fireplace if you have one for heat, wet a roll of paper towels with a couple of drops of dish soap for baby wipes, use soap and hot water instead of cleaners, drink water instead of soda, keep you lights and electronics use down to a minimum.

Go through your material things (clothing, furniture, toys, games) and decide what you use and what you don't use. Sell them on eBay. It gets you some money and removes the clutter from your life all at the same time.

Use coupons at every chance and cut down on you driving. Do all of your errands during one trip and plan a route that is cost effecient.

Good Luck!

Avoid things like Sky TV, expensive broadband (but the cheap ones are a lot of trouble), don't use the phone, or restrict the use of heating. Don't waste money on convenience foods. You will see advisers saying how to save on car use but they miss out ...don't use it so much, the most obvious.

change the light bulbs and lower your thermostat

The best way is to have a budget and stick to it. It is also a good idea to not buy processed foods as these are more expensive than fresh and are not very healthy.

The new light bulbs use much less electric, don't eat out, use the free water conservation kits given out by the water dept..

Turn off the lights

Blossom
don't shop at expensive stores
cut out on evening snacks
instead of buying drinks every day, buy it once a week, and use the bottle to fill it with water
and this is what i always do, every time you go out put a little money in a savings box, and take the money out at the end of every month and you should have quite a profit!
