Monthly Income Question?
I make about $700/month. I'm in college. If my rent is $280, utilities are $30, gas is $50, credit card is $50, and food is $75 (monthly costs), that will leave me with $215. Would it be wise to try and purchase a new vehicle (new as in 2000-2003)?

No. As long as your car is still running, hold onto it for a slong as you can. Buying new cars is throwing money down the drain.

no.

No not now. With a car, gas, and insurance you would not have enough. Especially if you ever needed any repairs on the car, you would be in trouble. If I were you,I would save the $215.00 a month. Then when your income improves, you will have enough money to put down on the car and enough for a rainy day.

if the cost of the car is around 100 dollars i think it would be ok. you would still have some money for yourself

wait until after college...If something goes wrong with the car...thats more money that you cannot afford....plus you have to remember gas & insurance....just wait it out....put that extra money away to save then you will have a nice down payment

A-non-e-mus
Some things to consider are how much is the insurance going to be, gas prices and maintenance costs, then how much will you be left with? You might be able to do it but it will be a tight budget. In all reality it is up to you, you are the one to judge if you can budget your money right or not.

It sounds tight, you still need money for clothes, presents and going out and a reserve for emergencies. Figure out how much the loan would cost you and try putting that money in a different account for a 2 or 3 months and see how you manage - if it's maneagable then go ahead.

Big Deall
You can obviously do math and you know you can't afford it you have to eat...

J D L C
no it would not be wise. Insurance will eat most of that 215 dollar.

If you have a car now, keep it. If not try to ride the buss or ride a bike or skateboard or something. You are young and when you go finance a car it will suck up that entire 200+ dollars that you get paid. what if you need some gym shoes...NOPE! GOT TO PAY FOR MY CAR!!! Oh, and you are going to need car insurance too! that will be another 200-300 a month, because of your age. Oh and then there is gas, oil changes, new wiper-blades every year, new air filter every other year...You get the idea. A new car is not just the payment. And god forbid you get a traffic ticket! Sorry to sound so much like a parent...But I am!

Think of how much $$ you have for a down payment. Otherwise your payments may be too much. Can you make a junker work for you until you're out of college and have a job that pays more?

giftbasketsbycortney
If you absolutely need one, don't go overboard and get more than you need even though it will be very tempting. Because summer is here and you will want to go shopping or go on a little trip of some sort. And once you add insurance to it, you will really be strapped. So just do it if it is a priority for you at this time in your life.
