My bank is going to charge me £30 because my standing order was 4p short!?
i have an account with nationwide which i only use for my rent, which is payed once a month to my landlord via standing order! this month ive just found out that the payment never went bacause it was 4pence short of the 6 hundred i pay!
admittedly this has happened before, last year twice and on both times it was small change, one occasion being 2p and they withdrew their charges but because its happened again they are saying there is nothing they can do and want the money!
im refusing to pay 30pounds over 4pence and they never even sent the payment to my landlord! it was only when my landlord called me and said he hadnt got this months rent money!
where do i stand? this is outrageous, do i have to pay? im going to phone them tomorrow again, ive heard about the "unfair terms in the consumer contract regulations act" should i quote this?
im closing the account next week and already have an appointment with another bank as my bank refuses to give me an overdraft!

This happened to me the other week.. they sent a letter charging me 20 pounds for a late payment (a catalogue)., I sent one back saying it was illegal to charge so much (I believe they`re only allowed to charge what it ACTUALLY COSTS to send out a letter - so 20 quid - NO WAY... anyway, I got my money back straight away... with an apology !! Dont stand for it!!

you could be doing with a overdraft by the sound of it but you can write into the bank to get your bank charges back.

we have a money matters group in our town who has a standard letter to send into the bank for bank charges to be cancelled. so get writing!!

claim the charges back, it may take a while as the banks are currently going thru a court case over this at the moment but if all goes weel you'll get your money back, call Ombudsman on 08450801800 and tell them you want to claim back your bank charges, they'll take some details and send you a formto sign and thats it, it's easy

I would quote the unfair terms in the consumer regulations act, and also threaten them with the ombudsman. They will get a fine even if the ombudsman rules in your favour, so they will want to avoid that. I used to work in a bank and usually if a customer came in to the bank and made a scene then the manager usually backed down. They can stop the charges and should. Im not suggesting you go in shouting and swearing but be firm demand to see the manager and do not back down.

Good luck

I'm with Nationwide as so far they've treated me decently. There was a hiccup a couple of years back when I was stung with a whole battery a bounced direct debits with the £20 charge on each one.

I'd given £300 to someone to pay in for me, when I caught up with her a couple of weeks later she was still carrying my money around with her. She said something about "not realizing that it was urgent"!

When I explained the situation to Nationwide they promptly cancelled all the charges.

Perhaps I was just lucky.

Ring a couple of times and try to get them to take it off again.

...but you can't say you weren't warned - you must have known perfectly well when the payment was coming out - how difficult can it be to have funded an extra few pence?

HairyBoater
Initially, write to your bank and express your concern at their level of charge. Request/demand a full credit for the amount debited. Advise the bank that if a satisfactory conclusion is not reached, you will take further action.

If this is unsuccessful, write to the banking ombudsman. This person has imposed a limits on credit card charges, reducing them from £30/40 to £10/12, and is keen to hear about your type of situation.

Also try the popular TV programmes to highlight your case. None of the banks want adverse publicity, and a bit of leverage from mass media might help.

It's your responsibility to make sure the exact amount of your rent was in this account so that your rent could be paid. Since you were 4 pence short, you do owe the bank their overdraft fee. Pay the bank and be sure that next month, the full amount of rent is in the account before it is supposed to be sent.

Capodastaro
nothing you can do about it

shih tzu lady
I understand you're peeved about it, but having been in that situation twice before, you'd have thought you might have learned your lesson and ensured it didn't happen again. Surely it's no hardship to check your account balance a few days before your direct debit was to go out. I'm sorry but I'm a bit short on the sympathy for a self inflicted situation such as this.

Can we take it then that Jeff has given us all the thumbs down because it's not what he wants to hear???
