if you can't afford to lose the money do not lend it, when you lend money you should perceive it in your mind as a gift, because if it is never paid back there will be so much animosity and loss of friendship it would not be worth it~

Either give him nothing, or give without expecting repayment. This is the only way to preserve your relationship.

No. When you give money to family, always think of it as just that... a gift. If they pay you back, that's bonus. But that's probably never going to happen. So if you don't want to *give* him money, don't do it.

Never lend any friend or family member money because it will probably be the last time you'll be talking to them. Even if you give it as a gift, they always come back for more.

Go for it..... Flip him out and tell him you will loan him money because you know right now that he is down and out. You love your brother and will help him in his time of need. However, tell him the only way you will help him is if he pays that money forward. Tell him down the road when he is able and he knows someone else is in need to take your money that he owes you and give it to that needy person. Then he is to tell that needy person to do the same thing.

Write him a check and on it write "A Loan." If it is a lot of money, it is better for both of you to put it in writing and clearly explain how much and when to be paid back. Then both of you should sign it and keep it safely until he pays all your money back. If things turn out badly for both of you, you can always go to a small claims court and believe me, with all the record i.e. check cashed, and signed paper, you will get your money back. That's all but please, use a cheque and put everything in writing (signed by both of you).

Now this is a tough question because only you know your brother. I would not have a problem lending money to my siblings because I know they are responsible. Take a look at his past and make a decision that you are comfortable with.

Don't expect to receive ANY money back...you will be sorely disappointed!

I try not to lend money, because it creates a lot of hard feelings between the lender and the lendee. On the same note, I don't borrow money either.

this is really the wrong place to be asking as we have no information on his personality or past history. You'll just have to discern the situation for yourself, but a general rule is "never lend anything with the expectation for it to be returned".

IE: if you yourself are in a tight situation at the moment don't really on him to be able to pay it back in a timely fashion. If he does, then good. But what if he can't? you end up being the one who's put in jeapordy.

well I'm guessing that it can't be more than $50. I would trust him - he IS your brother - BUT make sure your mom knows about it so that she can make sure you get your money back!
