My check was never cashed?
so back in August, I wrote a check for $915 to my school bookstore. It is now December and the check still has not been cashed. If it were you, what would you do? I surely do not want to contact them about it, I feel that it had to have been overlooked or lost. I am debating on whether to spend the money next month or not.....it has been a long time..i know they can still cash it at anytime, but wouldn't they have done so back in August?

I would close this checking account and open a different one. Then that check will never be cashed. For a $20 check I would not recommend this but for a sizeable amount like this to make sure I would close the account.

Checks are not valid forever, You may want to ask your bank what their policy is on checks presented to them several months old. It may be that even if bookstore finds checks and tries to deposit it, your bank will tell to go pound sand.

It would not surprise me if they find this error at some point and then deposit the check. It could be months from now .

You are under no obligation to inform them of this error. It is up to them to put an accounting system in place to make sure they take care of the cash properly. It is up to them to run their business well, not you.

yes they can still cash it

Unless marked otherwise, personal checks are good for a year. Some checks are pre-printed with earlier expiration dates, but these are usually business checks. I wouldn't count on it being lost at this point. If you are going to decide to spend the money, then I would seriously consider canceling the check before you spend any of it. If they do cash the check, they will probably contact you when it comes back as canceled and you will have to pay them then. Since it is a school bookstore, they can hold your future registrations, transcripts and diplomas until you pay. This is something to bear very carefully in mind. Having said that, there is a good chance the check is lost, so if you cancel it to protect yourself, I give it a good chance that the money in question is yours.

In answer to the person who asked how you spend nearly a grand at a bookstore, the answer is that textbooks are expensive, and in some majors, like accounting and most sciences those books can be $250 and more a pop. Some of these textbooks are impossible to get used, or require software that comes with the textbook that is one user only software. I was a literature major and until I discovered half.com and amazon used, I was paying $100-$200 per course for individual novels. If the asker is taking a full load, plus whatever notebooks and school supplies she needs, she might well have gotten some good bargains for that kind of money.

A check is a legal contract whether you are aware of that between you and the payee. You will still owe and as much as it would be fun to have that money back make no mistake, you owe the money. If you contact them they may have written it off and you may get to keep some or all of it. Clear the books. Good communication always pays on some level. Bad communication always has a way of catching up with you, not to mention the KARMA. I guess i did just mention the Karma. You'll get over it a lot sooner when you have a clear answer. If you can't afford it all at once arrange payments.

Yes, and I think it is always rude when people do not cash checks right away because then it comes to the person who wrote the check being very confused. You can always do a stop payment on the check in case they did lose it so no one else will find it and try to cash it. Although, you do have to pay a fee for doing a stop payment unfortunetly. : /

Contact your bank and ask about any time limitations that apply, what your legal standing would be if they later try to claim the money. I believe there is some reasonable time period after which they may not be able to cash it, at least not without some difficulty. But your school can really screw you up the *** if they later discover the error and decide they want their money...so contact the bank first, then contact your school as appropriate.

need to know
You purchased the items you owe the money if you spend the money and they cash the check you run the risk of overdrafting. Call the bookstore.

Your probably better off calling them and seeing what they say about it. Also call the bank some banks have policies on how long it has to be within the date of the check. But chance are if you spoend that money without double checking your options you are going to put yourself in a hole. Good luck!

Don't cash it because it may just be that they have finished there accounting/audit or sometimes it the bank. I would wait or close the account after 6 months. Nevertheless you still owe the money, and you know the right time to do.

Susan C
you could put a "stop payment" on the check and take your chances with the school bookstore...

Ashley D
call your bank and be one hundred percent sure it hasnt been cashed.

then, you know very well the right thing to do is to call the school bookstore and have them cash it. because one day they could look, realize it hasnt, and cash it when you DONT have the money in your account, and that leads to a whole mess of returned check malarky.

do the right thing and have them cash it

even if it has expired, eventually they are gonna look at their records and notice $915 missing.

and to the person who asked how you can spend that much in a book store, if your not in college yet, your in for a shock

It's stale check, bank won't cash it.

Shannon P
I think a check is only valid for 120 days maybe even 60 days after it is written. You could go to your bank and put a stop payment on the check and wait for the school to contact you if they try to cash it and cant

Christopher H
Cancel the check through your bank

Valkyrie

Read this...it is about personal checks...

Stop payment on the check before you spend the money.

Maiylee :]
goodness me
how in the world did you spend $915 at a bookstore?!
