puddy | My dad has found some old money in some boxes that were left to him by his dad about 3 years ago.? |
He hadnt really gone through them at the time and now the notes are not legal tender. The amount is about £3000, the notes are after decimalisation but before the current changes in notes, so he cant buy things with them.
What can he do? Can he change them somewhere and if so, does he need proof of ownership? |
|

Proof of ownership is possession, for cash.
Can't see it being a problem... if they are only 3 years old (really don't think they are particularly valuable or worthy of a museum (ffs!) as some are suggesting! If they are post decimalisation then they aren't gonna do a lot!)... you are talking old £10's and £20's... which are out of circulation, but still legal tender... take them to the bank, they should take them and if not, they'll tell you what to do with them. |

Before doing anything, think in terms of these bank notes as now being collectors items. They could, if in good condition, be more of more worth than their face value to some collectors.

Depending on the age and condition of the bank notes in the collection, some could be worth more than their face value.
There are plenty of old bank note dealers who might pay more than £3,000 for the collection of notes - they need to be in good condition.

i believe the bank of england will take back old notes and exchange for new, provided you can meet the criteria (summat to do with laundering i think, but £3000 is under the radar i think). He may have to go to threadneedle street though. |

the notes may not be in circulation but it is legal tender, as they are sterling. but just not used today.. therefore the bank have to honour your cash, take the money to the bank go to the customer adviser desk and speak to them. if you want to double check you should maybe try and email your branh, or call phone banking to confirm, but i am almost 100% sure they have to exchange afterall it is still valid cash with the same value as it has today. you would probably be surprised with the ammount of elderly people with these notes lying about the house, because they dont trust banks etc. |

You can take them to a bank and change them, or you could see if they are worth more than their face value by advertising them, or taking them to a valuation expert. |

Read this: http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/about/withdrawn_notes.htm
Try depositing them at your bank first. If they won't accept them, mail them in to the Bank of England, according to the following instructions:
