If it says silver certificate keep it, it's worth alot of money. The banks go through the money before it goes into an ATM so it's probably not fake. Take it to a coin dealer and they can tell you what it's worth. Don't take it to a bank because they will want to buy it back so it can be destroyed. |

I'm wondering why you think it's counterfeit. You could take the bill along with the ATM receipt to the bank and tell them of your concern. |

Just spend it to pass on the buck. If you turn it into police or the bank, they will not give you the $20.00 back so go ahead and spend it somewhere. Usually convienence store clerks don't know what they look like anyways as they are usually hispanic and black and not that smart to figure out if something is counterfeit. |

The question has a problem on its face: Banks are supposed to remove
older currency and return them to the Fed which then destroys them.
In short, no bank should ever give you an old bill. Others might, such
as a storekeeper, etc, but anything that has been "processed" (not just
into a change drawer and out again) in a bank should have old bills
removed.
It is therefore extremely unlikely that this came from a legitimate ATM.
Also, remember that ATMs ultimately are operated by banks. Indeed,
even if they weren't, the people who stock the machines would want
the currency to be new so that it wouldn't fold in funny ways when
it came out. The crispness of the bill makes it easier to mechanize
the process.
Of course, you can imagine a crisp 1954 20 dollar bill simply having sat
in someone's piggy bank for the last 50 years, but again, it would be against
bank regulations. |

Go to the bank and report it. They have cams that watch the ATM, they also have records of all tranactions. |

Do you know for sure that it is counterfeit or are you speculating, a $20..00 bill from 1954 will look much different from today's bills and if it is real regardless of the shape that it is in it will be worth at least $20.00 maybe more. |
