That all depends upon your banks policy on stolen or lost cards. Many have a limit on how much. |

Depends on your banks policy and how quickly you report it stolen to the bank. If in the U.S. issued debit card with a MasterCard or Visa symbol you can get your money back under Visa or MasterCard zero liability policy.
If you have not notified your bank, Notify them now using the emergency line or Call MasterCard or Visa emergency line depending on the type of card you have. You will need to know your card number. |

Was your pin number with it? As long as the number was not with the card then they should not have been able to withdraw any cash.
If you call and block the card straight away then you are covered.
My purse was stolen in Spain too, just 5 days ago, and all my cards - credit & debit, gone. Cancelled them straight away, literally within 15 minutes. All ok.
Chip & pin means that cards are only useful to anyone that knows the numbers. Is that not so?
Of course, upsetting and annoying (I spent an hour in the police station late at night; what a waste of time!).
I hope everything works out ok for you. |

hmm they might ask awkward questions if your PIN number was used in the fraud.
Yes they are usually sympathetic as long as A) you told the police and got a crime report number and B) you told the card issuer as soon as was reasonably practicable.
Of course every case is decided on it's "individual merits"... ( yawn) |

If all your money was withdrawn from ATM's then the question is, how did they get your PIN in the first place? If this is the case, then you have no claim as it's your responsibility to keep your PIN secure.
However, if it was stolen and then used in shops / restaurants etc. this is a different ketlle of fish and you should contact your bank immediately and make them aware of the circumstances. They may well ask you to provide proof that you reported it to the police etc. however each case is different so there is a chance they may look favourably at your request..
Contact the Bank and take it from there. |

Most banks will give you the money back if PIN number wasn't with the card, if it was they will investigate first. |

I Hope you have holiday insurance & you reported the theft immediatly. If you haven't got or didin't do either of those you could be in the poo & have no comeback! |

Most cards issuers are sympathic when it comes to stolen cards |

if you can prove it wasnt you that made the transactions the bank might have consideration for you and give you some compensation...
i'm sorry to say that you should read the small print when you get cards |

All the above replies are wrong. Under UK law the bank must pay back to you all funds stolen after you notified them the loss of the card and all but £25 of what you lost before you notified them.
The bank will probably want some proof that it was not you that spend the money. But as the money was spent in Spain while you were here, that is enough proof. |
