My elderly Mom has a Citibank charge card, the bill comes & there are many charges that she did not make on ?
the bill. She goes to the Citibank Bank where she has a checking account . They take the charges off the bill but then give her a NEW checking account & cancel the old one. Why would they do this? Thanks for any input.
Additional Details
As far as I know this is a regular charge card, not a debit card, so the two accounts were not connected. Also this is not the first time she has had something strange happen at that bank.

Because it is obvious that someone has gained access to her account. By canceling the account that has been intruded upon they can help eliminate the problem.

they do this because that other person who is charging to things to her account still has her number .. its a safety precaution.. you should be happy that they are doing this even though its kinda a pain

They did that to protect your mom.

Obviously if there were charges she did not make, someone had her info and was stealing her money.

So, by changing the account numbers, it blocks the thieves ability to steal.

Hope that explains it.

Micki
They did that so no further activity would go through the old account. Whomever did use your mother's account still has the account information. What would stop them from doing it again? Your mother's money is safer this way

Why wouldn't they do that.?! If she were to continue with her old account the likely hood of it happening again would be great...Identity theft!

Just always to make sure if there is a charge that was not made by her to report it as soon as possible.

Juboise
That is strange that they close her account because of charges on the card. I am at work right now, at a bank. If there are unauthorized charges on one of our customers debit cards, then we just shut the card off and order a new card. Just because that person has your debit card doesn't mean that they have your checking account number and routing number. If a person has automatic drafts coming out of there account, it can be a real pain to call all of the merchants and get that information changed to the new account number.

JM
they did it because someone could have access to her checking account which is why the charges are on the card. it was a safety precaution and good for them for doing it!

I've had Citibank for over 18 years and never heard of anything like that before. I can' see why this was done. I say call Citibank rep. and explain situation

bud68
By "charge card" I assume you mean a debit card; a debit card is linking to the checking account.

automatictomatoman
sounds like you need to take over your moms finances. never heard of a bank giving out new checking accounts everytime someone pays a bill. or you could call them and ask them yourself.
