By paying cash do you mean that he isn't reporting your income to the IRS? If so he isn't losing money until the IRS catch him.

If he means that he is paying your taxes for you then yes you are costing him money.

If he is reporting your income and deducting your taxes but not writing a check. I don't see how he would be losing money.

Kitty
Yes it is probably true since it is tax time and your boss is having to pay taxes on his income, and didn't claim that he paid you as an employee, which would be a write off for him.

it's for tax and i.r.s. purposes for your employer not to pay you in cash...

By paying you in cash, he is 'keeping you off the books' which means that the tax people don't know about you. It is so he saves money on taxes through tax evasion.

By putting you 'on the books' he might be trying to avoid suspicion from the tax officials by getting his business affairs looking legitimate. He is NOT losing money by paying you cash. If anything he is MAKING money by paying you in cash, because he doesn't have to pay any benefits. In fact, he might be avoiding paying you a higher wage that you are legally entitled to. I would contact the tax authorities anonymously and seek some advice.

Start looking for a better job, one with an employer who isn't so keen to screw the wages system and potentially you as well. I had a boss like that. She'd pay me and then ask for it back to 'float the till' until the end of the day, which meant I always had to have all my pay on me. Not good. So I got a better job.

Best wishes

That does not sound normal - cash is just the same as a check or direct deposit.

Unless he has some shady reason behind it, your best bet is to ask him why he is doing this

steely425
it is tax time and he may know that paying cash is illegal

Matt B
It depends, if he is declaring the money he is paying you and deducting tax /NI and paying employers NI then there is nothing wrong with paying cash.

However, if he is paying you without declaring it, which is probable when paying cash, firstly both of you are making / taking illegal payments and yes he will technically be losing out as he cannot claim your costs against his income for tax relief.

It may just be easier for him to pay you direct debit.

Ask your employer to pay through EFT.

STEVEN F
Assuming he actually withholds the REQUIRED taxes, the actual form of payment makes ZERO difference. Assuming he does not, you are BOTH guilty of tax fraud. There is NO law that requires him to pay in any specific form.

Edit: 2 prior answers stated that paying in cash is not legal. That is FALSE. The law requires withholding taxes and reporting to the IRS. As long as that is done, they don't CARE if you are paid cash, check, direct deposit, of chicken wings.

ollycat65
Well I'd say their business is failing, They're probably losing money - However they should not employ you any longer if they cannot afford to pay your wages. Unless you were to volunteer.

If he is paying you cash under the table....meaning not
reporting it.....yes he can get into alot of trouble.

He's not supposed to be (by law) paying you cash. He probably is worried about being CAUGHT! No, he's not losing money paying you in cash. That's silly.

depends if your on the books or are being paid under the table.
if your on the books,he will have to pay workmens comp.,match your ss tax, maybe pay health insurance.
but he can write off all this and your wages when tax time comes.
if your off the books, he pays the tax on the money he gives you,and he cant deduct your wages off the bottom line.
